Celebrity Baby Name Review

Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn’s daughter
Emery Hope Sehorn

Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn’s new baby daughter, Emery Hope, joins older sisters Finley Faith and Avery Grace.

Emery has a German origin and means “industrious leader.” It projects an image of a bright and studious bookworm who’s likable yet shy. It is similar in sound, origin, meaning, and image to Emily, the most popular girls’ name over the past decade—but Emery is much less likely to find a girl with that same name in her school classes. I commend the parents for selecting Emery, a more unique “name-book neighbor” of the #1 girls’ name, Emily (a strategy I recommend for avoiding names that are extremely popular).

What’s more interesting to me about this choice is the way Emery Hope’s name blends in with the names of her two older sisters, Finley Faith and Avery Grace.

Here’s what these names have in common:

  • All three first names, Emery, Finley and Avery, are mostly used for boys.

  • All three first names end in “y” (which runs counter to the popular trend of picking names for girls which have “a” endings or end in a consonant sound).

  • Two of the three first names, Emery and Avery, have three syllables—so they trip off the tongue well together, like Paul McCartney’s song, “Ebony and Ivory.”

  • And all three middle names, Hope, Faith, and Grace, have a spiritual or inspirational connotation. For these reasons, I commend the parents for selecting names for their daughters that fit well together (a strategy I recommend for avoiding a mismatched collection of sibling names).

Overall, Emery Hope is a pleasant, unique name that blends together beautifully with Finley Faith and Avery Grace.

My verdict: Two thumbs up!
