Is it thumbs up or thumbs down for Levi Alves McConaughey?

Baby Names in the News

Is it thumbs up or thumbs down for Levi Alves McConaughey?

I usually learn about celebrity baby names the same way you do: I read a clip from a gossip column or celebrity magazine. With just a name and very few other details to go on (apart from the identity of the parents, the child’s gender, and the name), my first job is to figure out why the couple picked that particular name. I then can evaluate whether expecting parents should consider following in the celebrities’ footsteps.

As it happened, I learned about the name that Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves chose for their son, Levi Alves McConaughey, during my recent interview on CBS’s The Early Show when Lara Spencer asked me what I thought of the name Levi. I gave it a quick positive review, connecting the name to Levi’s Jeans and commenting on its strong, masculine image.

I learned later on that when McConaughey announced the name, he provided some background information. “Levi is another name for the apostle Matthew in the Bible. Levi’s middle name is Camila’s last name. We wanted to incorporate her family name.” Now you know as much as I do. So, on to the evaluation.

Levi is a Hebrew name and means “joined in harmony.” It creates a very cool first impression: “Most people see Levi as a California surfer.” (I quote from my new book, 5-Star Baby Name Advisor.) The name is easy to spell, easy to pronounce, and has a clear masculine gender identity. The name is ranked #135 in popularity—and that trend is rising.

In summary, it’s definitely a cool name with a strong Biblical association as well as the perennially trendy Levi’s Jeans brand behind it.

My verdict: Two thumbs up!
