Garden of Angels. It is September 1974 and 14-year-old Darcy Quinlin has just started ninth grade in Lurlene McDaniel's Garden of Angels. Born and raised in a small town, Darcy is used to normal family life with her parents and sister Adel. But when her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer, Darcy's seemingly impenetrable world begins to unravel. Set amidst the backdrop of the Vietnam War, Lurlene McDaniel conveys a fictional story deeply rooted to her own battle with breast cancer, and the death of her beloved mother. The time period lends itself to Darcy's uncertainty about the world, and to the very limited information about breast cancer that existed. Darcy's journey to the world of womanhood is sure to strike a chord with all teen and pre-teen girls who will be touched by this classic story of the eternal bond between mother and daughter.

Author Scott O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter.
