Healthy Pregnancy Over 35
by Laura Goetzl, MD, MPH and Regine Harford

With more and more women waiting until later in life to have their children, it's no surprise that the birth rates for women aged 35 to 45 increased by more than 50 percent between 1990 and 2000. While being over 35 doesn't necessarily mean a high-risk pregnancy, older moms do have unique concerns.

Healthy Pregnancy Over 35 by Laura Goetzl, MD, MPH and Regine Harford is especially tailored for the midlife mom. From preconception to pregnancy to life as a new mother, this book provides expert advice for every stage. Despite the age-related concerns, the authors reassure readers that not only is pregnancy over 35 doable and manageable, it can be enjoyable and healthy as well.

This book is filled with beautiful photos and drawings and is divided into three sections: planning for conception (including information on when it may be time to seek help as well as assisted conception), pregnancy, and adjusting to motherhood. Each area features nutrition tips, exercise suggestions, medical information and career tips. The pregnancy section is divided by trimester and includes your emotional life, your body, caring for your relationships, career suggestions, exercise help, nutritional information, prenatal testing, and what to expect from your careprovider.

Prenatal tests (and the decisions involved) are a major aspect of pregnancy over 35. The authors explain the various testing typically offered to older moms including timing of tests, the risks involved, how the tests are performed, what information the tests provide, and how long the results take including how to cope with anxiety while waiting for results.

The concerns of career women are given special attention in each section of the book including tips for working moms-to-be and dealing the boss and co-workers.

What makes Healthy Pregnancy Over 35 such a valuable resource is the authors' non-judgmental approach. They seek to present non-biased information knowing their audience is savvy enough to make their own decisions. The information is balanced, straight-forward, and supportive - something hard to find in most pregnancy books today. StorkNet is very pleased to recommend Healthy Pregnancy Over 35!.
