April 4, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Avoiding Neck and Back Pain While Using the Computer
Posture ranks at the top of the list for good health. It is as important as eating right, exercising, getting a good night's sleep and avoiding harmful substances. Unnatural alignment of the body can cause head, shoulder, neck and back pain. It can also compromise neurological, digestive, respiratory and cardiovascular functioning. offers nine tips to keep your posture perfect when you're at the computer:
  • Sit up straight and deep in the seat. Your feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest.
  • Keep your lower arms level with the desk and keep your wrists straight. This helps prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Sit close enough to your keyboard to eliminate stretching but far enough to avoid leaning. Your shoulders should be back, and your head should be directly over your shoulders.
  • Tap the keyboard lightly. Don't pound.
  • Place your mouse within easy reach of your dominant hand. Hold the mouse loosely.
  • Place the monitor at eye level, 16 to 24 inches away.
  • Take short stretch breaks every 20 minutes.
  • Exercise your eyes frequently. Look away and focus on distant objects.
  • Periodically look up at the ceiling to give your posture muscles a break.

April 11, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Size Does Matter!
Notice how everything today is huge - including food portions? There are mega meal deals, mega muffins, mega beverages or submarine sandwiches that could count as 4 standard servings of bread if you pulled the sandwich apart and measured only the bread portion. The problem is that the huge portions served up at restaurants, delis, and in packaged foods suggest that the amount is a standard serving. In fact, these mega portions are often 3 to 4 times larger than standard serving sizes recommended by nutritionists. Think of it this way: A portion is what you are served or what you choose to eat at a meal or a snack. A serving size is a standard, measuring unit used by health authorities to describe recommended food choices.

April 22, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Helmet Season is Here!
If ever there was a season that could be called "Helmet Season", spring is it. Now that the weather is beginning to turn more favorable for outdoor activities, our children will be hitting the streets, sidewalks and parking lots with their bicycles, skateboards, roller blades and of course the newest rage, scooters.

Fortunately, most bicycle injuries do not jeopardize a child's health. Falls and minor collisions usually lead only to scrapes and bruises. Deeper cuts and broken bones occur less frequently. Serious injuries to the head and neck, however, are not uncommon. Approximately 1,300 bicycling deaths occur in the U.S. each year and over 500,000 people are seen in emergency rooms every year for bicycling injuries. Children, as usual, are at greater risk of injury than adults. In fact, 50 percent of all bicycle-related fatalities involve children. Most likely to be injured are children between the ages of five and fifteen years. CLICK HERE to learn important helmet information.

April 25, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Exercise and Keeping Fit While Having a Family
When you include family activities that can be used as exercise, you will create a strong family commitment and support system. You can use the following exercise guidelines to make exercise fun for you and your family, and see some actual physical results.
  • Go for daily walks with your entire family. If your children are old enough to ride a bike or rollerblade, let them while you walk, jog, ride a bike or rollerblade yourself
  • Get a baby jogger. You don't have to run or jog; walking at a fast pace will do just as good, but you should get a baby jogger they're much easier and smoother than a regular stroller for this.
  • Whenever you and your spouse or friends have free time, use it to go for a hike, a day of fun with the kids in the park, etc. When kids are at a park you'll get a lot of exercise because I'm sure you're aware that all children love to go up and down on the slide, swing etc. and they always want their parents to do it with them, so do it.
  • At home, get yourself a stationary bike. They're easy and convenient, and most importantly quiet. So you can hop on it and exercise when your little one is taking a nap.
  • Make sure your spouse knows how you feel and what you want to accomplish.
  • Take the stairs wherever you go instead of the elevators.
  • Play your children's games with them: hopscotch, kick ball, jumprope or what ever they come up with.
  • Take the dog for a walk.
  • Walk your children to school if it's nearby just or park your car nearby and walk the rest of the way.
