August 1, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Breast Self-Exam
At the same time each month, check for any changes in the normal look or feel of your breasts. If you are not menstruating (due to pregnancy, breastfeeding or hysterectomy), choose a day of the month and consistently check - such as the first day of the month. For information on how to do a breast self-exam, please visit our Breast Self Exam page.
August 1, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Yeast infections
This isn't the most fun subject but one that most women have to deal with at some point. A yeast infection is an overgrowth of the yeast that is normally found in the vagina (every woman has yeast as well as bacteria and viruses in her body). You don't have to "catch" a yeast infection from someone else and most don't begin that way. How do you know if you have an infection? The symptoms, according to OBGYN.net, include itching, burning, a white discharge, pain with intercourse and tampon use, or redness and irritation of the vulva. The best way to make sure your symptoms are a yeast infection is to pay a visit to your careprovider. Also, the best cure is prevention. Wear loose clothing and cotton underwear (or underwear with a cotton crotch), removing damp/sweaty clothing immediately after swimming or working out, and carefully drying the vulvar area after bathing. For more information, visit WebMD's Yeast Infections information page.

August 5, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Children's Vision and Learning Month
Children's Vision And Learning Month was created to encourage parents to have their children's vision tested prior to the start of the new school year. So, make that appointment and make sure your child can see properly. You can't always tell without an examination by a qualified eye-care professional! (I found this out the hard way!)

August 8, 2013: HEALTH TIP - How old is your toothbrush?
In your half sleepy state in the morning or exhaustion at night, how often do you take a good look at your toothbrush? You need a new one if the bristles on the brush are frayed or worn (or bent in a circular fashion like mine). For most people, a good brush lasts about three months (or less). So, get out of your chair (yes, right now) and go take a good look at your toothbrush! You might be surprised at what you see.

It's hot and sticky and your face feels like a can of crisco. Just as the dry Winter is hard on your skin and face, so is the Summer! Check out How To Do Your Own Facial At Home and Save Money While Getting Spectacular Results. Let's get that rosy glow!

August 10, 2013: COUPLES TIP - Massage Therapy
There's nothing quite as relaxing as a massage, especially if your mate is the one giving it to you. Treat each other to a back rub tonight or a foot massage or an all-over body massage. The New Sensual Massage by Gordon Inkeles is a great book to get you started if you need a little help.

August 12, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Back to School Prep
It's time to clean out those drawers and closets! Take the time to go through your child's clothing with him. Place all the clothes that are still in good condition that no longer fit into one pile. Place all the clothes that are in poor condition that cannot be appropriately mended, etc into another pile. Everything else that fits and is in good condition should be put back neatly into the drawers or on hangers. Don't forget to check shoes! The clothes that are too small that are in good condition can either be handed down to smaller siblings or given to charity. The clothes that are in poor condition can be used for rags, cut apart for sewing projects or thrown away. Be sure you make plans for each pile as soon as you're finished sorting. Do this for each child. If your child isn't heading off to school, it's still a good time to sort through those clothes. Next week, making that shopping list!

August 13, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Birdfeeder Safety
Hanging birdfeeders can be a terrific family hobby. To keep your visitors (and yourselves) healthy and prevent the spread of disease between birds, wash your feeders in hot soapy water once a month. Be sure they're completely dry before you refill with seed and hang. Keep seed stored in tightly covered containers until you need it. Thorw out any seed that is moldy or has bugs in it. Always wash your hands carefully after handling your feeders.

August 15, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Oh my swollen feet
It's common to retain more water during hot weather, particularly in your ankles and feet. One reason for retaining water is dehydration. Your body needs water so it's hanging onto watever it has. To flush out the water, drink! Yes, drink more water and lots of it. Water is the BEST fluid. Also, elevate those poor feet and reduce your sodium intake.

August 17, 2013: COUPLES TIP - Be sure to hug your mate for at least one minute today
The Power of Hugs! Hugging makes us relaxed, feel loved and content. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of life, we forget to hug our mate (or least forget to hug longer than 10 seconds!). And for moms, oftentimes, we're simply hugged out from a day of hugging little ones. Our mates and ourselves need grown-up hugs too so today, hug your mate for at least one minute ~ and enjoy!

August 19, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Back to School Shopping
Okay, you've cleaned out those drawers. Now it's time to make a list of what your children need along with a budget. You'll need to decide if each child needs underwear, socks, shirts, pants, shorts, dresses, skirts, etc. Decide what and how many of each. Keep in mind your budget needs as well. With your list in tow, hit the stores (as early as possible to avoid crowds). You'll want your child to try on the clothing before you buy. The older your child, the more difficult it may be to keep to your budget. Discuss your budget with your older children before you leave and keep to your intentions! Have fun with this. It can be stressful but I have some terrific back-to-school shopping memories which I hope to add to this year as well!

August 20, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Summer Lawn Care
During the hot, dry Summer, lawns can really take a beating. To help keep your lawn looking healthy, remember not to cut your grass too short. It's recommended that you only cut 1/3 of the blades so you don't shock your lawn. Grass cut at the right height will develop strong deep roots which are more drought resistant. Watering should be done early in the morning so the grass dries early. Here's to green!

August 23, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Heat Rash
If heat rash is driving you nuts, apply a cold washcloth to the rash for five to ten minutes. Ice will work as well. Wrap the ice in a towel and apply for five minutes. After bathing, use talcum powder. It helps to cool the skin, and it absorbs moisture. Wear loose cotton clothing and stay cool. If the red bumps turn into white pistures or if the rash doesn't go away within a week or two, call your doctor.

August 24, 2013: COUPLES TIP - Pass Some Notes
Surprise your mate with a card or note that have no purpose other than to say "I love you." Leave it on his/her dashboard, dresser, mirror or lunchbox (or whatever creative place you think of). Hallmark makes terrific "just to say I love you" cards but you can make your own just as well! Have fun with it.

August 26, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Back to School Prep III--mornings
A week before school starts, it's time to have your children establish a routine. Make bedtime earlier so they can get used to waking up earlier in the morning, and wake them up earlier each day. It's not such a shock to the system on the first day of school.

August 27, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Fabric Softener Substitute

August 28, 2011: RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS - Won't You Be My Neighbor?
Do you know your neighbors? If not, make some fresh cookies or a loaf of bread (or buy if you absolutely can't cook) and stop by your neighbors to introduce yourself. American families have forgotten about how to be good neighbors so here's your chance to capture this lost art. If you do know your neighbors, take some goodies over anyway just to say hello!

August 29, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Painful Periods
Painful periods, otherwise known as dysmenorrhea, or even more simply, CRAMPS!, can make those first few days of your period feel like you have a tummy full of knives. There are a few natural remedies you can try such as minimizing your intake of sugar, salt, fats, and alcohol in the days leading up to your period, and increasing consumption of green vegetables, grains, and legumes. Exercise can also relieve cramps so try some aerobics or talking a brisk walk. Relaxation is also very helpful so dig out some yoga tapes or try some deep breathing or meditation. There are also a variety of herbal/homeopathic remedies available. Check with your doctor, however, before trying any herbal/homeopathic remedies.

August 31, 2013: COUPLES TIP - Create a Romance Collection Jar
Create a Romance Collection Jar, and empty all your silver change and a dollar or two into it every evening. Once the jar is full, do something fun with it - a restaurant you want to try, a show you would like to see, and so on. Collecting the money builds anticipation, which is part of the experience. Make a list of restaurants, shows, movies, and so on, and hang the list next to the jar. Or, to make decision even easier, cut the list into strips and keep them in a container.
