July 1, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Breast Self-Exam
At the same time each month, check for any changes in the normal look or feel of your breasts. If you are not menstruating (due to pregnancy, breastfeeding or hysterectomy), choose a day of the month and consistently check - such as the first day of the month. For information on how to do a breast self-exam, please visit our Breast Self Exam page.
July 1, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Summer skin care for babies
Baby's skin is very delicate. It will burn much faster than an adult's. Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight. The American Academy of Pediatrics has an excellent article called Fun in the Sun loaded with many "must do's" to keep your baby safe from sunburn.

July 2, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Book/DVD Clutter
If you've collected a lot of books and DVDs over the last year, now is a good time to clean out the clutter. If you don't plan to reread the books or watch the DVDs, pack them up and give to a friend, ship them off to an elderly family member or donate to a library or other charity. You'll make someone happy and get a jump start on decluttering your home.

July 4, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Cottage-Cheese Thighs?
Are you bothered by cellulite? You know that lumpy bumpy area just below or at the bottom or your buttocks that creeps down the backs of your thighs. It's not pretty and 90% of women have it. There are new products hitting the market that promise to banish the ugly stuff, but it's expensive. And more importantly, does it work? According to Dr. Andrew Weil, you're better off spending your money elsewhere. But is there anything you can do? Dr. Weil advises that a healthy diet and exercise will have beneficial effect on the tone of the skin so that it will look better, but it will never go completely away. I guess this is one of those things women have to live with.

July 5, 2013: PAMPERING TIP - Summer Hair Care Tips

Your tresses can actually sunburn as well as your scalp. Summer Hair Care Tips by Karen Shelton is an excellent must read article on how to care for your mane in the hot dry summer months.

July 8, 2013: PARENTING TIP ~ Yard Safety
Just as you carefully childproof your home, you must do so with your yard as well. Many plants are poisonous, drownings can happen in a very small amount of water, garden tools are dangerous . . . the list is endless. The Netherlands Bulb Company (as in plant bulbs) has put together a great yard childproofing tip sheet. As they said, "With the right attitude, the yard, just like a properly childproofed home, can be a safe and happy place ready for hours and hours of family fun in all seasons."

July 10, 2013: RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS - Write a Note
Write a note! There's nothing quite like a handwritten note from an old friend/relative to brighten your day. In this age of e-mail and faxes, letter writing is a forgotten art. Today, take 30 minutes and write (not type!) a note to a friend/relative. You'll feel great, and your friend will feel special and loved.

July 11, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Exercise in the Summer
Just because it's hot isn't a good enough reason to give up your workouts. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious problems, however. It's important to take a few precautions when exercising in the heat of Summer. According to Health First, you should exercise in the cooler parts of the day, shorten the duration of your exercise and wear light, loose clothing. Most importantly, drink LOTS of water ~ before, during and after your workout. So don't give up your exercise. Just exercise SMART! Or take your workouts indoors. Read more in Exercising In The Heat by Lynn Bode.

July 12, 2013: PAMPERING TIP - Smooth Summer Legs
Just before shaving your legs, take a shower or bath. Your hair will "plump" up giving you a closer shave. Use a thick shaving gel or lotion so that your razor will glide better across your skin. Rinsing your razor frequently with very hot water will unclog your razor blades and help prevent nicks and cuts. Replace your razor after four or five uses. Follow your shave with moisturizer or hydrocortisone cream for razor burns.

July 13, 2013: COUPLES TIP ~ Make a CD
Make your partner a CD of his/her favorite songs, your favorite love songs, or favorite lines from movies. You could even record your voice reading a special poem or story or, if you're brave, confident, or talented, sing his/her favorite songs. It'll be a special gift for your mate to listen to in the car, while jogging or at home when you're not there.

July 17, 2013: RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS - Road Rage
It's Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and getting warmer. School's out, tempers flare, and we have nuts on the road. Be less aggressive, leave your road rage at home, and be a patient driver. When you spot someone waiting and waiting to pull out of a parking lot, stop and let him/her pull out in front of you. Use your blinkers, smile at other drivers, SLOW down. You'll find yourself less stressed, and you'll be giving others the benefit of your more alert but relaxed driving. You might even get smiled or waved at in return!

July 18, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Are you drinking enough water?
Water is a vital part of many bodily functions. Not only is it essential for living, it also helps in weight loss. How? Water makes you feel a tad full which suppresses your appetite. Next time you think you're hungry (or you just want to eat), reach for some water first and see if it satisfies you. Water is also calorieless, sugarless, caffeine-free and fat free so it is THE best alternative to coffee, sodas and other calorie-laden fluids. Most experts recommend eight 8 ounce glasses which is 64 ounces daily. For more info, read Great Summer Workouts: Just Add Water.

July 22, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Cooling Off
Are you as hot as your little ones this summer? Get out that plastic pool, put on your swimsuit, and sit in the pool with the kids! Or, run through the sprinkler with them. Don't worry about looking goofy. The kids will love it. You'll cool off, have fun, and show your kids you can be one of them too. One of my favorite memories (captured on video too!) is seeing my husband sitting in a small plastic pool (all 6' 3" of him!) with four little kids crawling on him and splashing him.

July 23, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - BBQ Tips
With the heat of the Summer cropping up, many families take the heat of cooking out of the kitchen outside to their barbecues. It's fun for the whole family (and if your family is like mine, dad does the BBQing, and I get a cooking break!). We even eat outside with wildly colored plastic utensils that we wash and reuse. If you're like me and a complete BBQ novice, visit Better Homes & Gardens' site on Grilling Tips. They include info on equipment, starting the fire, checking the doneness of meat, grilling fish, grilling vegetables, and lots more! Enjoy!

July 24, 2013: HEALTH TIP - Are you moley?
Everyone has moles. Do you know the different types of moles and what to watch for in your moles? There are many types, each with its own growth pattern. Most start out flat and brown or black (like a freckle). As you grow older, your moles will usually change - but slowly. Watch your moles for sudden changes such as size, shape, color or one that bleeds, itches or hurts. Anything out of the ordinary should be examined by a dermatologist. For information on moles, visit the American Academy of Dermatology's Moles Pamphlet Page.

July 29, 2013: PARENTING TIP ~ Organize your photographs
Do you have tons of pictures in boxes or envelopes that you haven't organized? If your kids are old enough, gather them around and spend a day sorting through the pictures and putting them in albums. Ask them for their ideas on captions. If you've already done this, then spend a quiet day going through your albums with your kids. They love looking at themselves (or even old photos of YOU) and it makes for some special memory making while looking at favorite memories.

July 30, 2013: HOME CARE TIP ~ Cleaning Pet Accidents
According to Mary Findley, when cleaning pet accidents, "Always keep a bottle of a live enzyme product handy. Nature's Miracle is an excellent product. Remember when liquid hits the padding it spreads. A stain on the padding is twice as large as the surface stain. Unless the entire area is treated the pet continues to return to that spot. Pour enough enzyme product on the spot to saturate to the padding. Follow bottle directions allowing the enzymes time to eat away the residue. Then rinse with 1/2 cup white vinegar per quart of water then again with plain water. Vinegar also helps neutralize odors."
