May 25, 2013: COUPLES TIP - Fostering a more loving partnership
According to author, Mimi Doe . . ."In the busy whirl of our lives we are expected to take care of so much--kids, home, pets, job, health, appearance, finances--that we might lose touch with our life partner. He/She is big enough to take care of him/herself, we think, relieved that there is one less area that requires our energy.

"Begin fostering a more loving partnership by identifying small actions you might take, for instance:

1. Set up time to articulate your shared goals and dreams. Don't call these meetings "dates" because when life gets busy, it's much easier to erase a "date" from the calendar than to reschedule a meeting.

2. Remember that you are in this partnership for the long haul. There probably isn't as much time or energy to nurture the relationship as you'd like during these years when your children are young, but your time will come.

3. Communicate honestly, directly, and often--even if it has to be through emails, notes, or phone messages.

4. Banish television--no kidding. Many couples tell me that once they got out of the passive evening television rut, they were able to focus on their partners. Finally the kids are in bed, you're exhausted and it's easier to zone out in front of some droll programming then relate to the person sitting next to you. Your marriage will blossom when you scale back the distractions and use the quiet moments you have to be together. "

May 27, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Summertime and Window Cord Safety Go Hand In Hand
Since 2000, nearly 40 percent of window-cord strangulations reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have involved children between the ages of 3 and 6. Toddlers frequently become entangled in window cords while climbing furniture to look out a window. In particular during summertime with windows open and shades drawn, the more exposed cords cause a heightened risk.

Consumers can eliminate or severely reduce a child's access to windows and cords by following these safety rules:
  • Move all cribs and furniture as far away from windows as possible, preferably against another wall.
  • Install cord stops on horizontal blinds and mini-blinds to prevent inner-cord access.
  • Secure all pull-cords out of reach by using a cleat or permanent tie-down device.
  • Eliminate looped pull-cords on older (pre-1995) mini-blinds and shades by cutting the loop and attaching safety tassels to the pull-cord ends.

May 28, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Microwave Cleaning
From All-New Hints from Heloise: If the inside of your microwave gets as dirty as mine, try this for easy cleaning. Put two tablespoons of baking soda or lemon juice in one cup of water inside a microwave-safe four-cup bowl. Boil in the microwave for about five minutes. The steam will condense on the inside walls of your oven. Remove the bowl (carefully - it'll be hot!) and wipe off the walls, inside of the door, and door seals. Voilá! You'll have a sparkling microwave!
