November 1 - 7 is Drug Free Babies Week. PLEASE participate or help develop programs to create public awareness of the dangers of maternal drinking and other drug use to fetal development. Babies damaged from prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol bring to the tasks of learning and behavior deficits that can impede success. Of most significance to performance are hypersensitivity to stimulation, disorders of alertness, poor organizational abilities, a diminished ability to concentrate and cognitive deficits. Public concern is the fuel to stop this PREVENTABLE tragedy!

November 11, 2013: PARENTING TIP - Pacifier Use
If you're planning to use a pacifier for your baby or if your baby uses one now, please visit the American Academy of Pediatrics' Thumb Sucking and Pacifiers. The AAP discusses how sucking thumbs or pacifiers are not harmful to babies; however, there are some important guidelines to follow such as not tying the pacifier to your baby's neck or wrist. It's VERY dangerous. The guidelines also discuss what types of pacifiers are best, when to discard them because of wear and tear and how to help your child stop using them at the appropriate time.

November 12, 2013: HOME CARE TIP - Cleaning For the Masses
You're hosting Thanksgiving and your house is a disaster. What do you do? First, relax and realize that they aren't coming to Martha Stewart's for dinner, so don't try to be Martha Stewart. If your house is really a disaster, then make a list of everything that you feel needs to be done in order of how important the task is. Work your way through that list and enlist your family to help you. Even little ones can help out. Tell yourself if the stuff way down on the list doesn't get done, it's no big deal. This is your holiday too and you need to enjoy it. Every room doesn't have to be spotless so focus on your kitchen, bathrooms (or the one the guests will use) and your dining area. Accept that everything doesn't have to be perfect, and you'll be amazed at what a special day you'll create for your guests AND yourself!

Recent studies show that too much refined sugar in your diet can exacerbate premenstrual syndrome. During the holidays, it's easy to overdo the desserts and goodies, but refined sugar is really BAAAAAAAAAD for you. Cut down or eliminate the refined sugar (sodas, desserts, candy, etc.) and you'll notice a tremendous improvement in your PMS. Your family will thank you!

During this month, make time to visit your local hospice and become aware of what they are doing within your community. If possible, make a donation. Beautiful white teeth are an important part of everyone's smile. If your teeth aren't as white as you'd like, there's a few things you can try. Cut down on coffee and tea which can darken your teeth. There are also several toothpastes on the market claiming to whiten your teeth. You might have some success with these but be careful. Thanksgiving is over, and you're feeling totally stressed out. Once the meal is over and the cleanup is done, take care of you! Stress is unhealthy and you deserve to be good to yourself with the advent of the holiday season. Remember to smile often and find at least one thing that happened to you each day. Laugh a lot - laughter is a great destressor. Soak in the tub with lots of bubbles and candles. Remember to breathe - inhale deeply and exhale fully. Sigh a lot - this is another great destressor. Take care of yourself and you'll have a more pleasant and enjoyable holiday season (and so will your family!).

Christmas Shopping can be a real chore. If your mate usually does most of the shopping, offer to do a few hours. Or perhaps both of you can do some of it together and have lunch out while you're shopping. Try to share in the chores this month so no one gets too stressed out. This is a good month to be extra gentle and considerate of each other.
