Pregnancy Complications

Hypertensive Disorders ~ PIH, Preeclampsia, Eclampsia, HELLP Syndrome

   High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy
Although many pregnant women with high blood pressure have healthy babies without serious problems, high blood pressure can be dangerous for both the mother and the fetus.
   Preeclampsia and Eclampsia
Preeclampsia is a dangerous combination of high blood pressure, fluid retention, and high levels of protein in the urine of women after their 20th week of pregnancy. Sometimes called toxemia, it affects about one in 20 pregnant women. If not treated, preeclampsia can worsen into eclampsia, a potentially fatal condition that involves seizures and coma. Preeclampsia puts unborn children and their mothers at risk.

A Question and Answer by Barbara Parker, RN, ARNP, CNM
Snoring When Pregnant May Be Sign of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
Snoring can be a sign of a serious health problem, especially if you happen to be pregnant. According to a report in the January 2000 issue of Chest, snoring during pregnancy may be related to complications, such as hypertension and edema.
   Chemical Imbalance Precedes Pregnancy-induced Hypertension
Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), commonly known as preeclampsia, can become a life-threatening condition. If a woman's blood pressure can't be brought under control, the baby must be delivered, or the woman may lapse into seizures and possible coma or death.
