What's the best and worst shower gifts you received? Here is what our StorkNet Moms advised . . .
From Erin . . . A good idea is to include something just for mommmy-to-be in your gift. My mom always gives a small personal gift as well as baby items. Something like a beauty basket a nightgown, or a gift certificate from a salon can really make a new mom feel special and pampered.
From Rachel . . . My sister bought me a makeup bag and filled it full of all the necessities for the hospital for myself . . . travel size shower gel, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, chapstick, shave gel, hair bands, etc. so I would have it ready for when I needed to go to the hospital.
From Leslie . . . I got a very nice bouncy chair with a mesh cover. It would have been so great for outdoor things and was even comfy enough for the baby to take naps, but it was obviously used and not cleaned. It wasn't wrapped and it was pretty dirty. Kind of a gross gift to give a newborn baby. I would have loved it, I'm sure if it would have been clean. Used is fine with me, but dirty, no!
From Julie . . . I just received the best shower gift ever!!! A couple friends pitched in and did a make over on the room that is now our nursery. They painted, and hung decorations. They did everything. Now my mind is at ease that the nursery will be ready, and I didn't have to do a thing!
From Heather . . . I just had a baby shower for my first child. BY FAR my favorite gifts were the ones I registered for. Do mom-to-be a favor and shop her registry, or get her items like diapers, wipes, bath stuff, lotion, that she will never run out of. I am expecting a girl and got so many outfits and she will NEVER wear them all! I had registered at Wal-Mart so it wasn't like the items I registered for were from some big expensive department store.
From Cori . . . I like to give a gift certificate to the new mom for an upscale department store where she herself can pick out that adorable newborn outfit. So many moms just need the experience of getting out of the house. I offer to watch the wee one while she gets to go shopping!
From Cristie . . . One gift that can never go wrong is diapers! Plenty of diapers!! Even sizes that are not newborn are great because you will eventually need them and are always happy to pull them out when the supply is low.
From Heather . . . Great gifts include anything than WILL be USED!! Diapers, wipes, lotion, oil, powder, desitin, oragel, baby wash, shampoo, etc . . . I have often bought a diaper bag full of these items. A Diaper Genie is great too. Bottles, nipples. liners etc shouldn't be bought because mom may have a preference or want to breast feed, so stay away from those unless they are specifically asked for.
From Talana . . . There are two unique gifts I received from my showers. The first one was a small Rubbermaid tote with a whole bunch of odds and ends, such as lotion, hangers, bottle/nipple scrubber, etc. My friend said she wanted to get me things I could use and not get doubles with. She was right!! However, my most favorite gift was a large wooden chest hand painted with Winnie the Pooh by a family friend, and filled to the brim with clothes from a friend on my husband's softball team. To have something that is not from a store, and hand painted with just my baby in mind was a true heart warmer!!
From Melanie . . .The best: A Boppy - a wonderful pillow for nursing, leaning the baby against, and helping the baby to sit when he gets older.
From Shire . . . Best: diaper genie, a ton of baby wipes and a baby swing!
From Sonya . . . The best: Exersaucer, Vibrating Bouncy Chair, Graco Swing, 4 in 1 stroller, infant car seats, bath towels, receiving blankets, diaper bag, medicine dropper, infant sleepers, onesies, infant socks. The gift I never used: infant carrier/sling.
From Katie . . . There is one thing that I got that I couldn't do without besides the usual crib . . . it is the swing. I don't know what I would do without it. My daughter loves it. She goes right to sleep once I put her in it, and I
don't have to worry about laying her down and waking her up either. Another thing that I loved was the homemade baby wipes. They don't cause rashes, and my daughter hasn't had one. Here is how they are made . .
From Ginga . . . The best baby shower gift I received was a laundry basket for baby's room filled with all the "little things" you need but don't know you need them until you need them. Good fingernail scissors, travel size products (wipes, shampoo, wash, powder, etc.), extra bibs, cloth diapers, baby tylenol, baby mylicon, diaper rash ointment, . . . you get the picture. Anything an experienced mom likes to have close at hand would make a great insert in this gift. This is now my standard shower gift to new moms!
