Ortho-Cyclen or Ortho-Tricyclen?
By Barbara Parker, RN, ARNP, CNM

Q. What's the difference between Ortho-Cyclen and Ortho-Tricyclen?

A. Ortho-cyclen is what is called a mono-phasic pill--that is, it has one level of estrogen and one of progesterone all the way through the cycle. Ortho-TRIcyclen, on the other hand has one level of progesterone, but the level of estrogen changes every week for the first three weeks of the pill (thus the TRI). Some people think that more closely mimics the actual menstrual cycle, and therefore will be more easily tolerated. I can't say that I think that's necessarily so, but both are excellent birth control pills.
