Best Timing For IUD
By Barbara Parker, RN, ARNP, CNM |

Q. I want to get an IUD. I am wondering how long I have to wait to make sure that I am not pregnant before I can get one. The last time I got one right after my 6-week check up.
A. You need to have two negative pregnancy tests, one week apart. It's best inserted DURING your period, since the cervix is slightly open at that time anyway. You'll feel less discomfort at that time as well.
The 6-week postpartum check up is an ideal time to place one as well.
