Bottle Feeding
How Much Should a Newborn Eat?
By Jennifer J. Francis, MPH, RD/LD

Jennifer FrancisQ. How much should my 2 1/2 week old be eating? Right now she is eating 3 ounces every 3 to 3.5 hours but sometimes still seems hungry afterwards. I just don't want to overfeed her.

A. A very basic guideline for infants up to 4 months is 6-8 feedings a day, for a total of 18-32 ounces.

The amount that your daughter is consuming certainly falls within that range, but there is room for a little more at each feeding.

It's more important to be attentive to her hunger/satiety cues than to follow a set amount plan. Trust that she will let you know when she has had enough. Your doctor will monitor her growth, and let you know if there is any problem.
