StorkNet's Breastfeeding Cubby

Leaking too much at night
By Jo-Anne Lawless, HCA, LC

Jo-Anne LawlessQ. My 2 1/2 month old son is now sleeping through the night (11 hours, occasionally 9 hours). The problem is me. He is fully breastfed except the occasional bottle of expressed milk. Because he is no longer feeding through the night I am leaking like crazy. How long before this will sort itself out?

A. It is very unusual for a 2 1/2 month old breastfed baby to be sleeping through the night, as your body is attesting to! You have two choices right now, wake him up partway through the night to nurse, or change shirts often until your body adjusts. Where does your baby sleep? If you bring him into bed with you, he will probably wake to nurse without rousing you too much. Some studies have shown that especially in the early months, this is a healthier alternative. Babies really do function dependently on the rhythms of their mothers. See if that helps out a bit. It really is quite restful.
