Cynthia FlynnBlack Cohosh for Inducing Labor
by Cynthia Flynn, CNM, Ph.D.

Q. What is the recommended dose for this herb to induce labor?

A. Dosages for herbs are not standardized, and brands vary in the amount of active ingredient. Different providers have different protocols for administration of the herb, and I know of no randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of different regimens. I learned from other midwives and have my own system which seems to work without side effects, but I know of other systems that midwives I respect use. Even though cohoshes are herbs, they are also drugs, and should not be self-prescribed. Talk to your care-giver before taking them.
