Childbirth Cubby

Donna BaloSex After Childbirth

Q. How long do you recommend to your clients to wait before resuming sexual relations after a vaginal delivery? I had my baby two weeks ago. I ended up with a small tear which required a few stitches. I've had a remarkable recovery to this point. No soreness whatsoever "down there." My bleeding has almost stopped. My doctor basically said I didn't have to wait six weeks but didn't give me any other guidelines. Do you have any advice? I hate the thought of waiting for 6 weeks!!

A. My basic rule of thumb is to wait at least 24 hours after all discharge has stopped. After that it is when you are ready. Some are ready in a couple weeks, others are ready several months later!

You may want to have some lubricant on hand (like K-Y Silk or Astroglide) as some women will need a little, especially if they are breastfeeding.

And think now about family planning!
