Dr. CamannCan Husband Stay While Wife Is Getting Epidural?
by William Reid Camann, MD

Q. I am very nervous about needles. My husband isn't, and he's very calm with me. Can he stay with me while I get an epidural so he can help me stay calm?

A. The answer to your question is very much dependent on the particular hospital's policies. Most hospitals, but not all, will allow a husband to stay while the woman receives her epidural. It would be especially helpful to explain to both the anesthesiologist and the nurse about why it is desired for him to stay.

It might also be helpful to find out prior to labor about the specific policies of the hospital, and your obstetrician could help obtain this information.

If your husband does stay, almost all hospitals will require him to put on a sterile mask and head covering during the actual procedure. These will be provided for him.
