Diaper Cover Poll
~ A Message Board Archive

From JanB:
OK, usually I'm not much for polls, but we're in the market for some new diaper covers, and I was just wondering what other people like. His newborn size diaper covers were a combination of ProRaps, which I liked, and some local store's brand, which were OK. We have some medium sizes that are hand me downs, but they're not in the best shape and I'd sort of like to get some new ones.
  1. What diaper covers have you used?
  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?

From Amieee:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
I have Bummis Super Whisper Wraps with velcro and with snaps also. I also have some polar babies but they don't fit my daughter yet.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
I like the Bummis with the snaps. The velcro is a pain to wash. I like them because my daughter will only wear that one size cover. She is hard to fit also because she has super skinny legs, but these have fit her since I bought them when she was 4 months. I have had no leaks. Did not have to pin initially. Now I have to snappi or pin since my daughter can remove them

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
    no

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
I don't have overnight covers yet. Hoping to get some fuzzi-bunz.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
I bought mine on ebay. I got 4 for 27 dollars. A friend of mine gets her proraps from prorap seconds, and they are only 3 dollars a piece. You call an 800 number for them.

From tuckersmama:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
We've used Bummis SWW, Imse Vimse Bumpy, Bumkins, Gerber, Stacinator, and Polar Babies.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
My favorites are Bummis (top choice!) because they're economical, last thru everything, super easy to care for, and fit comfortably. We've never seen a single leak, and we've used these at bedtime I also am a big Bumkin fan. They are the trimmest fit as far as cpf's and covers go. They are really easy to care for as well and fit well, though they leave red marks on my son's thighs (doesn't seem to bother him, though!)

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Didn't care for the Imse Vimse. For being so pricey, the fit wasn't the greatest and it always rubbed my son's tummy. Also didn't like the Gerber wraps. They were very cheap feeling, seemed to offer no breathability, and we didn't like the fit.

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
Lately we've just been using Bummis with a fleece topped hemp doubler or Bumkins with 2 cpf's and a doubler. We do have Stacinator and Polar Babies, which I used to swear by, but just using our day covers seems to be working, too. (the way it happened that we started using our day covers was that we ran out of clean t-shirts for my son and I find that if you put pj's over fleece, it compresses and you get leaks) Anyway, the Stacinator and the Polar Babies are terrific! I never cared for wool. Some people swear by it, but we tried an Aristocrat and really hated it.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
My favorite stores are NaturalBabies and Babybellebottoms. Wonderful prices and customer service.

From Psnyder:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
I just love Biobottoms wool (now Mia Bambini) and imse vimse wool. I've tried the terry but they are not as good.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
    Biobottoms (Mia Bambini)

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
    Cottonwraps.

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
    Nope wool is great anytime.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
Ebay! I paid from $5-9 each used and $8-13 new on Ebay. (they retail for $20 apiece new from the catalog or website.)

From Ursula:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
Mother-ease, Bummis Super Whisper Wraps, Bumkins, Fuzzi Bunz, Bumkins, Polar Babies, Pro-wraps.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
I like the MEs with snaps because the leg casings stay dry, they fit really well, and they've never let me down.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Kushies, Fuzzi Bunz, MEs with velcro

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
No, MEs work great day and night

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
    Ebay

From Lisa Jo:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
olar Babies, Bummis Super, Bumkins, Motherease Rikki, Pro-Raps, Biobottoms wool, Bumpy (Imse Vimse) wool and cotton, Kushies, Snapi-Wrap, Cot-n-Wrap for prefolds, ME Airflow, Dappi nylon pull-on, Alexis nylon pull-on for fitteds, probably others I've forgotten!

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
For prefolds, I loved Bumkins. They are super lightweight, have a trim fit, are very reliable, and so cute! I also liked Polar Babies, Biobottoms and Pro-raps. Bummis were great until they started to wick at the leg bindings. For fitteds it is hard to beat the ME Airflow, though I also love the Alexis nylon pull-ons.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Snapi-Wrap wicked through the whole cover, Kushies fitted diapers and AIO's leaked terribly (though I did like their cover). FuzziBunz didn't work at all for us - they had a really awkward fit and always leaked.

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
For awhile I liked Biobottoms and Bumpy wool, until she outgrew them. My favorite nighttime diaper has been Motherease Sandys with a Bareware fleece-topped doubler or Benjamuffins fitted. The covers I like with those are ME Airflow or Alexis pull-on. Supeabsorbentnt and never leaked!

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
eBay and the swap board at Amitysworld.

From SusanH:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
FuzziBunz, Imse Vimse Bumpy day covers, Bumkins, Bummis SIWW (velcro), Motherease snap covers and Green Earth.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
That depends on what you are using them for. Bumkins are great for prefolds, very trim, dry quickly and have cute prints. They won't work for fitteds, though. Bumpy covers are great with prefolds or fitteds and have very soft velcro. Bummis are very practical, durable covers that work with everything, but aren't that soft. Motherease are my favorite for fitted diapers, but they don't work well with prefolds. Also, they are a little bulky. I liked my FuzziBunz when I had them but now I prefer using a trimmer system.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
    no

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
I used to use FuzziBunz at night and now I use Motherease.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
I have always had great success with Bareware. I ordered from BabyMine in the StorkNet shopping mall and my order came very quickly. I prefer to order from WAHMs whenever possible.

From tuckersmama:
Oh! I have to add to my above reply that we HATED Fuzzi Bunz. They never fit right and always leaked. Not worth the $$ at all!! Totally JMO!!!!!!

From miche:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
GerberEZ covers, ME AirFlow, FuzziBunz and a variety of harder to find older less common brand very expensive covers that I was given by a friend whose diapering days are over.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
They all had pros and cons. I LOVED the gussets on the Gerbers for newborn blow-outs. I never had a leak with them! But after one child they had been washed too much and they completely lost their waterproofing! And they ran small so my first was in the size toddler (which says 35+lbs) since he was 6 months old and 21.5lbs!) On the other hand the one ME Air Flow in size M/L fit my first child from age 3 months until past 2 years. And it didn't lose any waterproofing and I'm now using it with my second child. I used the various fancy covers with the second because the handmedowns I got were in size A and B, but I have big kids and he outgrew them quickly. There were several all cloth ones that were supposedly leak-proof, but my son soaked all those. I started using those with a doubler as a diaper instead of as a cover as they were intended.

I purchased ME AirFlows to replace the ruined Gerber covers. They are only a little more expensive, and they last and their XL actually fits my large toddler (which is a moot point since he is now potty trained). The only drawback is the "Air Flow" also means leak flow at nighttime for my kids. And the leg elastic doesn't keep in the really liquid breastfed blowouts as well as the gussets did in the Gerber EZ covers. I would have bought more Gerbers, but WalMart stopped carrying them and to order online was basically the same price as ME.

Fuzzi Bunz I hated at first because the fit wasn't right and they leaked, but everything else leaked and MORE with my toddler at the time so I kept working with them and his shape changed and suddenly they were wonderful...and the next day he night trained But I found they actually fit my baby who at the time was leaking through the air flow slots of the ME covers! SO... now I like Fuzzi Bunz.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Anything that was 100% cotton and supposedly was supposed to be waterproof . . . none were for me! Give me that plasticy coating of somekind to keep the wet in!

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
    Now I use Fuzzi Bunz.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
For MotherEase if you want new you have to buy directly from them now.

From Y Thingy:
  1. What diaper covers have you used?
    Bummis SWW and Motherease Airflow

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
Bummis is very leak-proof, very durable and fit my baby right.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Wasn't too thrilled about the Airflow. DS leaked easily because he likes to sleep on his sides.

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
We use Bummis SWW with large prefold and fleece liner.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
We bought them from a local cloth diaper store.

From Laura Z:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
Imse Vimse Bumpy Day, Imse Vimse Bumpy Night, Bummis SWW velcro, Bummis SWW snap, Bummis Cotton, Green Earth, Kushies, ProWrap, Bumkins, Re-Uzm snap ~ probably others that I'm not thinking of right now.

  2. Which did you like the best, and why?
Imse Vimse Bumpy (Day) ~ They are soft, cottony, and have a very wide soft velcro area. We use them with prefolds and have never had a single problem with them. Bummis cotton would be a close second.

  3. Are there any brands you especially *didn't* like?
Green Earth ~ insides turned an icky yellow, don't fit well. Kushies ~ I disliked the material. ProWraps ~ plastic inside cover. It's too hot for that here!

  4. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
    No.

  5. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
juliestuff.com ~ She was great to work with and also sells California Baby soap, sunscreen, etc that I love.

From CynthiaH:

  1. What diaper covers have you used?
We love the Bumpy covers, Nikkys, and Bummis. The bummis work well with prefolds, and the Nikkys work well with the fitteds. The Bumpys work well with both.

  2. Do you have special diaper covers for overnight, and if so what?
Bumpy makes a day cover and a night cover, but I haven't noticed much difference.

  3. Where's the best place to buy diaper covers?
I've bought from greenmountaindiapers.com and chooseydiapers. Also I bought from a Canadian co, which with the exchange rate made them cheaper than purchasing in US!

From Stacy:
Jan have you tried the Gerber EZ covers? They have velcro, but it's extremely durable. These covers were my favorite and very inexpensive. I found them at my local independent baby/tot supply store, but many mail order CD companies sell them too. They run around $6 each. I've also used the following:
~Dappi's (from Target and the baby store I mentioned...didn't care for the wicking)
~Proraps (from my diaper service. These were also good covers.)
~Pull up nylon/taffeta covers from Target...Good only for back up when my other covers were dirty and being laundered. I had to pin them on the elastic part to keep them snug. Not highly recommended IMO.)

You mentioned you were planning to buy a few samples to try. Good idea! I highly recommend giving the Gerber EZ wrap a try too. That is if you don't mind a synthetic cover. Hope this helps!
