Cloth Diapers Cubby

Cloth Diaper Poll
~ An Attachment Parenting Message Board Archive

From Lisa Jo: Ok, I know cloth diapering isn't necessarily an AP "thing," but most of us CD-ers at StorkNet seem to be on this board. Just for fun:
  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth?
  2. Do you CD full time or part time?
  3. Why do you use cloth diapers?
  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above?
  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems?
  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers?
  7. What are your favorite brands in covers?
  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc?
  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure?
  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line?
  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash?
  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth? Buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc?
  13. Do you know many other parents IRL (in real life) who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them?

From SusanH:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? 18 months, started at one year

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? full-time

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? economical, FUN, better for baby, better for environment, no creepy gel crystals

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? prefolds

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Daytime, I use a premium prefold and Bumkins cover; nighttime I use a FuzziBunz with 2 prefolds but may change to a different system soon.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? haven't tried anything else, but I would like to try Snugglebottoms.

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? Bumkins have been great for us, and they are really cute. I would love to try Imse Vimse, Motherease airflow, Nikky, Polar Babies and other pricy covers someday.

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I use Bummis stay-dry liners occasionally for outings or overnight. They work well for daytime but even two aren't enough for night anymore. And I use baby washcloths for wipes.

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? All dipes go into a trash can after shaking off anything that can be easily removed. Wash on hot with All Free & Clear, do a second cold rinse with vinegar when I remember, dry on high heat with wraps on the top of the dryer to air dry.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? I haven't ordered from them, but I love to window shop at Bareware, Katies Kisses and Earthbaby.

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? I have 3 dozen prefolds, 6 Bumkins and 3 FB. I wash every 2-3 days.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I would order a much wider variety of covers and dipes to experiment a bit more. Also, I bought seconds for my prefolds which was a mistake - they are wearing out really quickly.

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? I went to Miche's son's birthday party and it was filled with cloth diapering APers! That's the only place I've ever met another CD-ing person IRL.

From dini:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? 14 weeks old. Started at day two (after the cord fell off).

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? Full time (though I have used the cotton/paper diapers in an emergency)

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? Environmental concerns, no diaper rash, soft, hypoallergenic, less waste to deal with

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? Prefold, diaper service

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? We use the same for both. He doesn't wet much at night.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? N/A - have only used a service so far

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? Imse Vimse Bumpies

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? Cloth wipes. So far I have used the liners as emergency note paper more than as a liner

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? The service has you toss them in a plastic bag in the diaper pail. No rinsing. When I wash them myself (ran out a few times) I soak and prewash in hot with a little of our natural detergent, then wash in warm (with detergent), and rinse a second time in warm water with 1/2 cup white vinegar.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Earthbaby.Com, GentleMom.Com

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? Diapers - 110 per week. Covers - 9. I rinse when just wet, and wash the covers every three days as one load with his clothes.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? Would have ordered 110 diapers/week from the start. We started with 70 -- not NEARLY enough! Wouldn't have bought the Bummis wrap. Holds the urine smell and seems uncomfortable.

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? My sister-in-law! That's all. And she and I decided to cloth diaper at the same time (before pregnancy).

From Lisa Jo:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Natalie is 13 months and has been cloth diapered from birth. I also CD'd my son from birth to toilet training.

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? Full time.

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? My top reasons are the environmental benefits and health benefits to my baby. It depresses me to think of the virtual mountains of disposables thrown away every single day, year in and year out. I am disturbed about the info I have read on the gel used in disposables, and the dioxin created by the paper bleaching process. I wear cotton undies myself, and think it is more comfy to babies than plastic and paper on their hineys 24/7. The cost savings are incidental to me - I would cloth diaper even if it were more expensive. AND - even though this will sound weird - I derive satisfaction from washing, drying and folding Natalie's diapers.

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? I use prefolds and fitteds (snap style).

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Now that it's summer I am enjoying using the cute patterned fitteds with no cover. Generally I like prefolds in a velcro cover for day, and a fitted with snap cover for night.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? I just bought some used Baby Moon fitteds and I LOVE them!!! They are so soft and very cute too. I really like the Motherease One-Size and Sandies fitteds as well. I don't know the brand on my prefolds, as I bought them used.

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? I reach first for my Polar Babies or Bummis Super Whisper piggy print. I also like Bumpy (both wool and cotton) by Imse Vimse, plain vanilla Prowraps, and Motherease Airflow and Rikki.

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I always use the snap in doublers with the OneSize, as they are not absorbent enough otherwise. I use Bareware fleece/terry doublers if I do a prefold at night. At night I always use a fleece liner. I use cloth wipes and 100% love them. I used regular disposable wipes with my son, but a friend made me these by cutting a large washcloth in fourths and serging the edges. They are the best!!! I just fold them in half, wet down a stack, and put them into an empty rectangular wipes container. I have about 30, and am never in danger of running out.

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Dry pail. I shake the solids into the toilet, and throw the soiled diapers into the pail along with the wet dipes, liners, doublers, cloth wipes, and the sturdier wraps (Prowrap and Bummis). Wash on hot with Amway detergent, no bleach or softener, two cold rinses. In the interest of saving energy (for the greater good, not because I need to save money), I line dry them till they are damp, then throw them in the dryer to finish up.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Bareware, ebay, Amitysworld swap board, MothersNature auction.

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? I have 2 dozen prefolds and 15 fitteds for a total of 39 diapers. I have lots of covers - many more than I really need. I probably have over 15, though I really only use about 8 or so regularly. I wash every 4th day.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? Not really! I've enjoyed trying different brands, and can pass along my recommendations on things we've tried. Actually, one thing I've discovered is that 4x8x4 prefolds are really thicker than we need. I change Natalie a lot because of her sensitive bum, so we don't need the extra absorbency. I have recently bought some 4x6x4s to replace half of my 8s.

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? Yes - lots! My sister, Ursula (we met here, but meet regularly in real life), women at La Leche League, a playgroup I recently found that has lots of "natural parenting" style mamas. I love to see fellow cloth users!

From Ursula:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? 11 weeks, when she came home from the hospital.

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? Full time

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? It has nothing to do with money nor environmental concerns, although those issues are a bonus, it's because I don't want chemicals and plastic on my baby's bum.

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? When she was a newborn, we used prefolds. Now we use fitted diapers and AIOs.

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Since she's still small, the Motherease AIO work great for day and night. They're my faves. When she gets bigger, I may switch to ME Sandy's for night time.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? Motherease

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? It's a toss up between Bumkins and Bummis

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I use polypropolene liners at night, so she'll feel dry. I use doublers with the ME one-size fitted diapers, and I use only homemade wipes. I thought I'd do cloth wipes, but I haven't figured out how to use them with a wipes warmer.

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Dry pail, one for poopy, one for wet. DH throws both in to soak in washing machine overnight, then wash in long cycle with All clear and free. In the rinse cycle, he puts one drop of lemon essential oil. Then one of us line dries in the sun before fluffing in a cool dryer for 5 minutes.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Ebay

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? 16 AIO ME, 20 one-size ME, 3 FuzziBunz, 10-15 Kushies. For covers, I have 6 ME, 1 bumkins, 1 bummis, 2 Kushies. We wash every 3 days, but have more than enough diapers to go for several days longer. We wash when we're low on AIOs.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I wouldn't have gotten the Kushies covers nor the Fuzzi Bunz. Also, I'm having problems with the velcro ME covers. They rub my Dd's belly. Right now we prefer snaps on that brand.

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? I know LisaJo, whom I met through here and who was one of the main reasons I started this. The first time I read about it here when I was expecting, I thought No Way! But look at me now. Thanks LisaJO! Also, I know a lot of women from LLL who CD. Plus my sister did it years ago, but with a diaper service and we had to pin them.

From Psnyder:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? DS is 9 months and started CD when he was born.

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? Part-time since child care provider requires disposables.

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? They are more comfy and better for my son's bum.

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? prefolds

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Daytime and nighttime are the same. I use a chinese unbleached prefold with a wool velcro cover.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? I have all Earthbaby unbleached prefolds in standard

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? Love Biobottoms wool covers (guess I'll have to switch to wool bumpys though).

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I use cloth wipes when I'm at home. I keep them in a wipe warmer and I have the ones that are the perfect size to fit in the warmer without folding. I just put water in there - no added ingredients needed. Sometimes, when ds's bum is red I use a fleece liner. I made them myself after I saw them in a diapering catalogue and realized that fleece doesn't fray and that I could just cut them in about 30 minutes.

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Throw them in a dry pail as quickly as possible after shaking off any solid poopies.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Earthbaby for diapers, Born To Love for Wool wash and ditty bags. Ebay or mothersnature for covers.

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? 4 dozen diapers and 7 covers. I probably have too many diapers. I wash about 1x per week when I am working and about 2x per week when I am on vacation.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I'd buy a larger diaper pail.

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? I have met lots of CD parents at my LLLI meetings. Both my SILs used CDs also.

From Mom2MNMz:

  1. How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Natalie = 23 months; Morgan = 1 month

  2. Do you CD full time or part time? Both Girls = Part time. Disposables when we go out and at night.

  3. Why do you use cloth diapers? Initially, we switched because of the expense of having two in diapers (plus a boy still in *Goodnights* because he's a bedwetter by heredity). But now, my reasoning is more towards environmental the more I have read about it. I've cut the trash coming out of my house by half.

  4. Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? I have 7 Snuggleups flannel fitted diapers. 5 Kissaluvs (size one), 12 Prefolds, and 20 Kissaluvs (bought used) size 2

  5. What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? For daytime, I prefer the Snuggleups. I really like them. Then the kissaluvs and then the prefolds. Natalie is always in kissaluvs. I use disposables at night. I just don't have that many diapers and the girls are heavy wetters. I do have a Fuzzi Bunz that Morgan grew out of, but she peed through it every time she had it on throughout the night.

  6. What are your favorite brands in diapers? I haven't tried that many. But I really like the snuggle ups.

  7. What are your favorite brands in covers? Bummis Velcro. Haven't been too pleased with the snap Bummis.

  8. Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? When I get a sewing machine, I would like to make my own wipes. For now, I use disposable wipes.

  9. Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? I have a canvas bag I keep the dirty diapers in. I shake out/rinse Natalie's soiled diapers. The bag gets washed with the diapers when I wash.

  10. What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Twiddlebritches.com, Ebay, WAHMall.com auctions

  11. Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? Wash every other day. Cold rinse, add detergent for Long Agitation wash cycle of Hot wash/cold rinse. And then another long agitation cycle of hot wash/cold rinse but I don't add any more detergent.

  12. Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I wish I had started years ago. But I had no idea there was a CD subculture on the net!

  13. Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? My sister
