Cloth Diaper Poll ~ Page 4
~ An Attachment Parenting Message Board Archive |
From Terrilein:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Lauren is 4 1/2 months and we just started using cloth 2 weeks ago.
- Do you CD full time or part time? Part time actually since SO hasn't (or rather doesn't want) gotten the hang of it yet. He actually did try again last night and got it right. Applause!
- Why do you use cloth diapers? When it comes to "blow-outs," disposables just aren't much better with Lauren. That and I found those yucky gel clumps stuck to her butt - one bad package - so I decided to give it a whirl with a diaper service. Diaper service is not cheaper or environmentally better - that's the official word over here, but at least I know what's stuck to my baby's bum!
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? I tried prefolds and had lots of fun with the bikini twist, but I am enamored with the Disana tie-ons, what the Germans call "Italian" or Strickwindel. They are sooo easy to use and really cute!
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? I use the same day and night.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? Disana!
- What are your favorite brands in covers? No clue. While I like having a leak-proof cover, it has to be breathable and I'm not too sure of the covers available here. I'm just using what the diaper service delivered.
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? The tie-on is not enough for any kind of wetting. Muslin liners are usually used in the tie-ons, although there are other liner available. I use mini-prefolds as a liner nights.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? In the sack and hand-off on Wednesday!
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? I don't yet. But I think I might buy from www.babu-baby.de
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? about 55/day
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I would have started with cloth right away.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? Nope and I'm getting a lot of slack from SO's friends
From TES:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Well, my baby is three weeks, CD'd from day one, but I switched to cloth when #2 was about 1 year.
- Do you CD full time or part time? Full time
- Why do you use cloth diapers? Because! LOL no, really, because they're soft, comfy, what I'd prefer, better for my baby and the environment, disposable's chemicals scare me!
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? I mostly use fitted, but have prefolds as well.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? All I have for this one is Molly Togs and Laurie Loo's so.... I guess I'd prefer to use Molly Togs during the day and Laurie Loo's with doubler and cover at night.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? My very favorite have been PuddleCatchers, but she's out of business. So, other than that, I think it's a toss up between the two mentioned above.
- What are your favorite brands in covers? Hands down...Mother Ease AirFlow snap covers!! Just wish I had the small ones for Benjamin already!
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I used fleece liners with ds #2, no need with this one because of the inner layer of most of his dipes. I also use doublers (NEED more) And we do cloth wipes as well.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Dry pail. When full, cold soak with touch of "free" detergent. Warm wash with 2 "touches" detergent. Double rinse with cold, dry on high. Minus the covers of course.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? I've only bought a couple things online...my best service was with Puddle Catchers, then Molly Togs.
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? For Benjamin, I only have 2 dozen fitteds his size. I also have a couple dozen "cheap" prefolds I double up and use on occasion, but primarily I use the fitteds. I only have 2 dappi covers that fit him right now (but he goes coverless most of the time anyway). I wash every other day or so, depending on how many prefolds I decide to use.
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I would just be sure to buy 3 dozen diapers in the newborn/small size. I *may* have bought a different brand. I'd definitely buy more covers. I would totally stock up on ME AirFlows!! And a few more Bummis for my prefolds.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? A friend of mine switched to cloth not long ago, then used disposables for a while when a lot was going on with them (a move and stuff). I don't know that she switched back though. Last I heard she was still in disposables. I have a new friend here who is expecting in the next month or so. She's going to do cloth. And a friend I met through my midwives when ds #1 was born . . . I met back up with her when #2 was about 1, right when I was thinking about cloth. She was doing cloth, so I figured I can do this!
From Elee:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Julia is 13 months old--we started using cloth when she was 2 months old (when all the disposables from the shower ran out, lol).
- Do you CD full time or part time? Full time
- Why do you use cloth diapers? I use them primarily to save money. I had one child in diapers for four years, and I hated throwing my money away. I'm also happy that Julia's diapers won't be around for future generations to worry about.
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? I primarily use prefolds, but I have a few fitteds that I like to use for a change.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? For daytime I like a premium prefold with a velcro wrap. For nighttime I use a regular prefold with a Fuzzi Bunz.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? I haven't tried a lot, but I do like my chinese prefolds
- What are your favorite brands in covers? I like Bumpy's and Bummis SIWW
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I use disposable liners when we're out for the day so I can dispose of messes easily. I also use cloth wipes.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? I keep the diaper pail in the bathroom, poo gets dumped. Every other day I dump the diapers in the washer, set it for a cold rinse with a little detergent, then for a long hot wash with a little detergent. Then I do a second cold rinse. Then into the dryer for an hour.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? I've bought most of my supplies from www.thebabylane.com and jardinediapers.com.
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? I have 4 dozen diapers, 10 covers, and I wash every other day even though I could go longer. But I don't like letting them pile up.
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I would have bought less diapers. I could get by with 2 dozen because I wash frequently. A dozen diapers sit unused in Julia's bedroom.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? NO!! I would love to meet someone who also cloth diapers! I had a friend who was *interested* but never got into it (even though she changes her dd's diaper 10-12 times a day and could save quite a bit by using cloth!). Another friend literally cringes when I mention cloth diapers. She didn't know a cover goes over the diaper, duh!! Oh, my MIL used cloth on dh when he was a baby, does that count?
From twokats:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Three weeks, and we started using cloth when his cord fell off . . . we have just been doing this for about a week now!
- Do you CD full time or part time? Daytime only, but will use full time starting next week.
- Why do you use cloth diapers? 5000 diapers in the garbage? $2500-$3000 in the trash, literally? It just makes sense to use cloth.
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? Prefolds right now. I am thinking about getting some ME fitteds, though.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Don't know yet. I am going to try fuzzi bunz next week.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? ME fitteds and chinese prefolds are working great for us so far
- What are your favorite brands in covers? bummi sww--awesome covers, no leaks
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? not yet
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Dry pail, presoak, wash with arm and hammer, machine dry high heat.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? california babestuff
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? 36 newborn chinese prefolds, 3 nb bummi wraps, 6 small bummi wraps (sww). Wash every other day so far
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? too soon to tell
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? Yes, my midwife, sister (in the past), a friend, and my best friend plans to cloth diaper when she has a baby.
From Nette34:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? 11 months
- Do you CD full time or part time? Full time. I use disposables for the babysitter
- Why do you use cloth diapers? I wasn't working as much and I knew it would save us money. And for Jolene.
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? AIO's. I got a deal on some and they worked out great. Now she has grown out of them and we are using prefolds. Just getting used to them.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? We have never had a problem at night. We do the same for both. I think she had leaked twice since we started to use them.
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I made my own cloth wipes from some extra wash cloths.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? I have a dry pail and one that is the poopie is messy enough I clean in ttoiletiet and soak until wash time.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Green Mountain
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? 1 dozen diapers and 5 covers. I wash usually every 2 days.
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I would have bought different sizes in the AIO's so I would have some for now and some for the next baby in a smaller size.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? No
From Laura Z:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? Christi is 3 1/2 months old. We started CDing at almost 3 months.
- Do you CD full time or part time? Full time
- Why do you use cloth diapers? Because I hate my job. My boss gave me a really crummy raise, so I decided he gets what he pays for. I've spent a lot of time since then on-line and ya'll talk a lot about CD. I found out how much money we could save, so we decided to give it a try.
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? Mostly prefolds, some AIOs.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Daytime: Flannel prefold and Imse Vimse cover. Night: Premium prefold and Imse Vimse cover
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? The Kushies flannel prefolds
- What are your favorite brands in covers? Imse Vimse Bumpy (Day or Night)
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? Imse Vimse Disposable Liners. These are wonderful. If no BM, they get rewashed several times. If BM, flush right down the toilet. Easy, breezy! For wipes, we use wash cloths with plain ol' water.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Two pails. Most all go into the dry diaper pail. Any that are stained get soaked. Machine wash everything and then inspect (smell) and rewash if needed. Line dry.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? choosydiapers.com. She was so nice. I've ordered twice from her and had to make changes both times. She didn't even act like I was an idiot, and she shipped out the orders UPS ground the same day (I even got the tracking number to check on the package's progress).
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? Diapers: 2 dozen premium prefolds, 6 Kushies flannel prefolds, 1 dozen flat. AIO: 1 Bumkins, 1 Kushies, 1 All-Together. Covers: 1 Bumkins (too small and we don't like the velcro tab inside), 2 Bummis SWW (which we HATE - they don't fit DD well at all), 1 Green Earth (our favorite of the cheapy wraps), 2 Imse Vimse Bumpy Day (LOVE 'EM), 2 Imse Vimse Bumpy Night (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE 'EM), 1 Kushies (okay), 2 Prorap (Hate the plasticy inside). 11 Total. DH does laundry every 2-3 days.
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? I'd buy only Imse Vimse covers and liners and I'd get more of the flannel prefolds.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? I have plenty of neighbors who CD.
From nemm:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? She is 3 weeks old today, and we have used them from the start.
- Do you CD full time or part time? full time so far
- Why do you use cloth diapers? baby's bottom and for the environment
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? We are using a service right now, with prefolds.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? No system per se, just put dirties in the bucket the service gave us. We do use flannel home-made wipes that have their own bucket for me to wash.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? Using service diapers right now
- What are your favorite brands in covers? I bought 3 or 4 different brands at a second hand store, so far I like the biobottoms a lot, but that is partly because they fit her little skinny legs the best. i will be reading other responses to get ideas about other brands.
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? We make our own wipes by cutting old flannel sheets into squares, and soaking them in a water, baby soap, almond oilavenderdar oil and tea tree oil mixture.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? One bucket for wipes (we wash them), one bucket for diapers, (service picks up weekly)
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? n/a
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? I think the service brings 70 a week, but we have only used about 2/3 on any given week. We have about 4-6 covers. I had to pick up more, because her legs are so skinny, that there is usually some leakage, we can go thru 2 or 3 covers in a day on a busy day! I'm waiting for her thighs to chub up so that this comes to an end!!
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? nope
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? Of the three friends who had babies in the past 8 weeks, at least one, and possibly 2 are cloth diapering. They are all friends of many years.
From kiki's_momma:
- How old is your baby, and when did you start using cloth? She's 6 months now; I started at ~ 2 weeks. I planned to start from birth but she was too small for the diapers and covers I had bought.
- Do you CD full time or part time? Part time--during the day I use CD. At night and some outings I use disposables. Again, I had planned to CD full time but I never weaned myself totally off the disposables. They just hold so much pee at night and I have been too chicken to try cloth at night. She already is a restless sleeper and I am fearful that the wetness will exacerbate this.
- Why do you use cloth diapers? For the environment.
- Do you use prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones, all of the above? ALL of the above.
- What are your favorite daytime and nighttime systems? Daytime only--I rotate prefolds, AIOs and fitteds with bummi's whisper wraps.
- What are your favorite brands in diapers? Zippidy's cotton fleecey's--they fit well and are not bulky. Seem to hold the poop in well too.
- What are your favorite brands in covers? I have only used two - bummi's and some a friend gave me - not sure the brand. They have gusseted legs and I like those better than the bummi's.
- Do you use any other accessories, such as liners, doublers, cloth wipes etc? I have a couple doublers (bought for nighttime use) but have not tried them yet - she doesn't pee all that much during the day. I also have some cloth wipes but I don't use them exclusively over other wipes.
- Briefly describe your diaper pail/laundry procedure? Rinse the diaper in the toilet, wring out and toss into a diaper pail, lined by a water resistant cloth liner. Wash everything together on cold for 6 minutes to rinse. Then everything on warm or hot with the soap.
- What are a few of your favorite places to buy diapering supplies on-line? Choosey diapers. Very helpful and good prices.
- Approximately how many diapers and covers do you have, and how often do you wash? 3 dozen diapers and 10 covers. I tend to wash every 2 days.
- Knowing what you do now, would you change anything if you were starting over in cloth . . . buy different quantities, brands, types of diapers, different pail, etc? More of the fitteds because I like them so well. Fortunately, dd is thin and hasn't outgrown her first ones yet so it hasn't been really expensive. Forget the AIOs--not that much nicer and too expensive.
- Do you know many other parents in real life who cloth diaper? Where did you meet them? Suprisingly I know quite a few. I don't believe this would be the case if I were not living in northern CA and hanging out with lots of other moms I met at a bf support group.
