Statistics show that one in six couples will experience infertility. It's odd, though, how you seem to be the only infertile person you know, and all of your other friends and relatives conceive without a second thought. In my opinion, one of the worst things about infertility is the isolation - the knowledge that you aren't like other people, and that you can't relate to much of what they're saying. And they, in turn, can't relate to your experience.
I can't imagine going through infertility without the Advanced Fertility Issues forum at StorkNet. From the first day I joined I've found a comforting ear and a wonderful, supportive resource in other women who are experiencing the same struggles and concerns. I no longer feel alone. My online family of friends are there 24/7 when I need them. I would like to share this fabulous resource with everyone reading this page who is looking for this kind of information and support.
By joining the AFI forum at StorkNet you can:
- Ask questions related to your specific protocol. "Has anyone else done a three plus three drug regimen?" "What side effects can I expect while using vaginally delivered Prometrium?"
- Get ideas about future treatment. "Has anyone ever heard of TESE with microdissection?" "Can you recommend a good IVF facility in central Illinois?"
- Find a buddy who is going through treatment at about the same time as you. "Is anyone else planning to start Lupron in September?" "Is anyone going to do an IUI this month?" You can cheer each other on and compare cycles.
- Access a safe outlet for your feelings that the fertile world will never understand. "My best friend just told me she's pregnant." "I have to attend a baby shower on the same day I started my period." "I can't do this anymore." You will never find another place where people say, "I understand.", and you know that they do.
The important thing to remember about AFI is that participation is only open to women who have been trying to conceive for at least 12 months or to those who are receiving some sort of help with conception. You will not see women who are conceiving in their first or second month of trying. Instead, you'll find a compassionate group to help you through the rough spots and celebrate the good times.
I hope you'll think about taking a look around, getting a feel for the place, and joining in. Suffice it to say that none of us want to be there, but it's at least nice to have some company for the trip.
