December 2003 Project of the Month
Holiday Potpourri

Charon working on her potpourriYour child can make some fragrant potpourri! Just follow the simple instructions below. Depending on the age and ability of your child, they may need some help with a few of the steps listed.

Materials Needed:

  • Cheese cloth
  • Scissors
  • Dried orange peel
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Ribbon, yarn or twine

Directions:

  1. Use the scissors to cut pieces of ribbon, yarn or twine to tie the potpourri bags. (We needed pieces about 10-12 inches long; you can always trim the ends off after tying the bow.)

  2. Use the scissors to cut out squares of cheese cloth. (We made them about six to eight inches square, and we used two layers of the cloth.)

  3. Place one cinnamon stick, some orange peel and some cloves into the center of the cheese cloth. (You can also get creative and think of different items to add.)

  4. Bring the four corners of the cheese cloth together so that you've made a little bag out of the cheese cloth.

  5. Tie the bag closed using your ribbon, yarn or twine.

  6. Copy gift tag/directions below, adding your child's name, and include it with your potpourri. (These make great additions to gift bows!)
