Egg Carton Kitty Cat
For ages 5 and older, younger children with assistance

Materials:

  • Egg carton (preferably an 18 count carton with cups with round sides)
  • Craft glue (such as Tacky Glue)
  • Black acrylic craft paint
  • Paint brush
  • 1 black pipe cleaner (straight or bumpy)
  • 1 orange pipe cleaner (straight or bumpy)
  • 1 12mm bell
  • 2 7mm googly eyes
  • Pink felt
  • Optional: 1 miniature pink pompom instead of cut out felt for nose), candy corn (instead of pink felt for inside ears)

Directions:

  • Cut out three sections of the egg carton. For the legs the best section is the inside of an 18-count egg carton, as it will provide the best shape for legs. If using a 12-count carton the cat can be made, but will appear to be sitting on its back legs as the shape would not allow for four "legs". For the other two pieces the section used does not matter.

  • Cut the sections to make the shapes below. Be sure to trim off the rough edges. (Click image to see larger view)

  • Glue the pieces together to make the cat (see photo to the right, click image to see larger view)

  • Paint all surfaces of the cat black following the instructions on the bottle of paint for drying times

  • Decorate the cat:
    • Collar: String the bell on the orange pipe cleaner, attach around the neck and tie in the back.
    • Ears and nose: Cut two inner ears and a nose out of pink felt (or use a mini pom pom) and glue to the cat (or use candy corn for inner ears and a broken white segment of candy corn for nose)
    • Eyes: Glue googly eyes onto face.
    • Tail: Glue the black pipe cleaner to the bottom side of the egg carton between the "legs". Cut to desired length for tail.

  • Feel free to add whiskers or a red felt tongue.

For a non-Halloween cat be creative and paint some white feet and use other colors for the collar.

Enjoy!
