Crafts for Kids

June 2004 Project of the Month
Pencil Pals

Kids young and old will enjoy making and writing or coloring with these cute pets.

Materials Needed:

  • White, black and pink craft foam
  • 1 each pink and white pompom
  • 4 googly eyes
  • Pink and white pipe cleaner
  • Pink and white dimensional paint (fabric paint in squeeze bottles will work)
  • Glue

Directions:

For mouse:

  1. Cut one large circle from the white foam and two smaller circles from the pink. Cut a small section off the pink circles so one side is flat.
  2. Glue the pink ears to the white head.
  3. Glue a pink pompom to the middle of the face.
  4. Glue two eyes close together above the nose.
  5. Draw a smile and whiskers in pink dimensional paint.
  6. When mouse face is dry coil a pink pipe cleaner around a pencil. Glue to lower back of mouse so that some shows as a tail.
  7. Let dry and slip onto the end of a pencil.

For cat:

  1. Cut a head (including two pointy ears) from black foam.
  2. Cut out two small triangles from pink foam for inner ears. Glue to the head.
  3. Glue a white pompom to the middle of the face.
  4. Glue two eyes close together above the nose.
  5. Draw a smile and whiskers in white dimensional paint.
  6. When cat face is dry coil a white pipe cleaner around a pencil. Glue to back of cat so that some shows as a tail.
  7. Let dry and slip onto the end of a pencil.

Experiment with different shapes for other animals.
