M. Bonnett ~ Zoe, now only 11.5 weeks, is on her second ear infection! Is there some connection between being preemie and ear infections? It just seems so strange to me, not having dealt with this until much later with my boys. Any good ideas to help avoid them? She primarily sleeps semi-upright in her car seat (her bassinet has been relatively useless!)
mommy2taylor ~ Poor Zoe! I'm sorry you and her are having to go through this. I'm not sure about a corralation between being a preemee and ear infections but my daughter is 11 weeks and was 5 weeks premature. We just made our first trip to the ER last Wednesday for guess what? An EAR INFECTION!! The ER doctor said that normally they don't see ear infections in babies younger than four months and when they do it is a pretty bad sign of more to come and possibly tubes. ((grrr)) My little sister and I both had ear infections as children, my sister had to have tubes, and neither of us were premature so I don't know if my daughter's are from being preemee or if they are hereditary. I really don't have any information that could be helpful to you; I just wanted you to know you are not alone. Take care of that baby and yourself. Maybe someone else will have some information on the subject.
JaJa ~ My oldest was 5 weeks early and he didn't get any ear infections until he was almost 2 years old, but IMHO I think breastfeeding had a lot to do with it. Cody (being 16.5 weeks early) got one in the NICU and then didn't get any more until he was about 1 1/2. And he was also breastfed but for a shorter time period.
TracyR ~ Brendan was my only preemie and has only ever had 1 or 2 ear infections. However he has had a lot of lung infections and pneumonias. Out of my other three, they have all had a lot of ear infections. My oldest had one right after another from a couple weeks old until he was 2. The doctor was just getting ready to put tubes in his ears when he stopped getting them like that. I don't know how much of a preemie thing ear infections are as opposed to just kid things.
spe ~ My daughter was four weeks early and has never had an ear infection. I really think that a vaccine she received during her first year, Prevnar, has a lot to do with that. It is a vaccine against meninghitis, but also provides protection from ear infections and the like. We lived in NYC at the time (a year ago) and it is done routinely as part of all the shots. I live in Chicago now and don't know if it is 'the norm' here. Ask your pediatrician about it . . . I hope your little one is feeling better!
JMN ~ My daughter was 4 weeks early as well, and also received the Prevnar vaccine. However they did not seem to help her ears. She is 13 months old now and has had ear infections on four separate occasions - 2 of which were double ear infections. Her pediatrician does not think it has anything to do with her prematurity but more likely due to the shape of her inner ear and the fact that her ears tend to "hold fluid." The good news is that as she gets older the infections are becoming less frequent and less severe. GOOD LUCK!
