Hello! I am a NICU nurse who got to experience being on the other side of the fence per se when my son arrived five weeks preterm. He was what we affectionately call a "whimpy white boy"!! He had to be on oxygen for three days and under bili lights for 2.5 days. We stayed a total of six days. I had the benefit of knowing everyone who was taking care of him, but it didn't make it ANY easier to leave him for even a second! My hormones were somewhere around my feet, and I didn't want anyone messing with my baby!!!
Avery has a big sister who was almost 17 months old when he was born, and she didn't understand why Mommy and Daddy were gone so much, and her baby wasn't home like we had talked about. I really struggled with the feeling that I was visiting both my children - dd at my inlaws and ds in the hospital.
We had a rough start breastfeeding but stuck with it as are now happily breastfeeding at almost eight months!
Hang in there, you can do it!!! It really gave me a new respect for all those parents who come and visit their baby/babies day in and day out for months on end. I hope I never have to visit any of my future children in the NICU, but I will continue to be a living testimony to the fact that you will survive the experience!
Avery was 35 weeks, weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and was 18 3/4 inches long. He will be 8 months old on the 19th of July and weighs 17.5 lbs now and is 27.5 inches long!!! Yeah breastmilk!!
