When to test with OPKs
by Cynthia Flynn, CNM, Ph.D.
Cynthia FlynnQ. I've heard various things about when to test with ovulation prediction kits and fertility monitors. The instructions say first morning urine, yet I've also heard that the LH surge the test is looking for shows up in the 12:00-3:00PM time frame and that is actually the better time to test. Is there any truth to this? If you do test in the middle of the day, how long should you hold your urine?

A. Test instructions may vary, but generally, the tests are calibrated on the first-morning urine. Check your own instructions to be sure. If you have any questions about the specific kit you buy, check the product information. They usually have a toll-free number you can call to ask the manufacturer specific questions.

Good luck!
