StorkNet's Week By Week Guide to Pregnancy

Preconception

Can a Woman Get Pregnant the Day After Her Period?
by Cynthia Flynn, CNM, Ph.D.
Cynthia FlynnQ. If a woman has sex the day after her period, can she get pregnant?

A. Absolutely! Especially if:

  • she has just stopped taking birth control pills, or
  • it's not very many days from the start of one period to the start of the next (she has a short cycle), or
  • if she has periods that last over a week, or
  • she's with someone whose sperm last a long time (7 days is possible).

But even otherwise! If you don't want to be pregnant, you should use good birth control ALL the time.
