Cynthia FlynnCramps at 4 Weeks
by Cynthia Flynn, CNM, Ph.D.

Q. I am 4 1/2 weeks pregnant and I have cramps that feel like those that I get just before/during my period. Is this normal?

A. Yes, it is very normal. You actually conceive in the fallopian tube. When the fertilized egg gets to the uterus, it implants in the uterine wall. Many women experience implantation as cramping. There may even be a bit of bleeding (called implantation bleeding).
