Urine Leakage and Kegels
by Donna Harvel Balo ARNP, CNM, MS
Q. This is embarrassing but I sneezed and was wet, cough = wet, move or bend = wet. Besides showering, changing and using pantiliners, Kegels, what can I do to help this embarrassing situation from happening again? I know that my uterus is now on top of my bladder rather than behind it. I don't want to have a problem after kids with my bladder.
A. The best advice I can give is Keep on Kegelin'! Think about doing them throughout your day when you are doing other things, so that you remember. Some of my favorites include: when you are waiting in line, when someone ticks you off!, when you hear the word or think the word baby, every time you change a diaper, or hear a phone ring, etc. Be creative! Do it during love making; he'll love it!
Do 50 a day slow closing and slow opening. Then do 10 "twitches" real fast closing. After birth, as soon as you think about it, start doing them again! Check out this article: Exercising Your Pelvic Muscles - aka Kegel Exercises. Good luck!
