Lifting During Pregnancy
by Nancy Sullivan, CNM, MS, FACNM

Nancy SullivanQ. I am 19 weeks pregnant with a normal pregnancy. We will be moving when I am about 21 weeks along. I know that I should limit lifting, but to what extent?

A. Most midwives and doctors advise limiting lifting to object no heavier than 20 pounds. However, I would try to find some other way to be helpful during the move, e.g., packing and unpacking, organizing, etc., and let others do the lifting. Unless you are used to this strenuous physical labor, now is not the time to get started.

I wish women didn't have to move during their pregnancies, but it seems that many do!
