Sunbathing During Pregnancy
by Nancy Sullivan, CNM, MS, FACNM

Nancy SullivanQ. I will be 9 weeks pregnant when I start my beach vacation next week. I always use sunscreen and I am aware that I need to stay well hydrated. Is there anything else I need to avoid or do during my beach vacation? Is laying on the beach OK as long as I stay cool by taking an occasional dip in the water?

A. I have nothing to add except maybe a big floppy beach hat. Some women do have skin that is very sensitive to the sun during pregnancy, causing them to break out in hives. If that starts to happen, get out of the sun. Otherwise, slather up with sunscreen and have fun.
