Pilates While Pregnant
By Lisa Stone, ACE

Q. I have been doing Pilates and just found out I am pregnant with baby #3. Is it safe to continue this type of abdominal work? I'd really like to keep exercising since it makes me feel good and helps me to tone. If I can no longer do Pilates, what can I do?

A. You should be able to continue the Pilates through your first trimester. After that, you'll need to modify the back-lying exercises so that you're not exercising on your back. Talk to your instructor and see what he/she recommends. That said, don't stop doing abdominal work, just don't do it in a back-lying position after your first trimester.
