Advice on Water Aerobics
By Lisa Stone, ACE

Q. I started taking a water aerobics class before I knew I was pregnant, twice a week. I am 11 weeks, 3 days and recently during the class, I find myself having cramping type pains (stretching kind of), back pains and just overall feeling like I do not want to be there. Is it good to keep continuing? My OB says keep going as long as I feel good and just stop what I'm doing when the pains start. But what does feel good mean these days anyway? I would really appreciate your advice on this topic. I really thought water aerobics was good for pregnant women!

A. Water aerobics usually *is* good for pregnant women, but if it's causing you pain or discomfort, then it's not good for *you*! The pain you're feeling could just be round ligament pain, though it's pretty early in your pregnancy to be feeling that.

Is your instructor certified to teach pregnant women? If so, then you should talk with her about what modifications you need to make in the class. If not, then you might want to look for a different type of class during your pregnancy.

Best of luck to you!
