7. StorkNet Member: If a spouse isn't actually hitting, but is verbally abusive, is it still considered domestic violence? What is the definition of domestic violence? My husband has never struck me, but he has anger that comes out in verbal abuse beyond what I can take much longer. Thank you.

Jennifer: My heart goes out to you. It is difficult for some women to accept the fact that they are in an abusive relationship if there is no physical abuse. I know you will understand this: The scars left by verbal abuse can be just as deep as those left by physical abuse. It is domestic violence. It may not be something for which the perpetrator can be arrested, but it IS abuse. In addition it can make one feel crazy. You will hear women saying, "But he doesn't lay a hand on me."  It doesn't matter. The fear is still there. The damage is still done. Your self worth is chipped away and you begin to feel hopeless.

Is your husband open at all to counseling with you? If not please go yourself. You will learn ways to communicate better. There is a fact about family therapy: If one member in the family changes, all the other members must change as a response. I don't know that it will be change enough, but at least you will have emotional support to make decisions and to follow through with them.

Your instincts are good. They are telling you that you do not deserve to be verbally abused.
