66. StorkNet Member: My nephew is in an abusive relationship. Other family members have witnessed physical abuse, and she tried to run him down in her vehicle. He did tell that every time he saw her that he thinks about divorcing her, but then he seemed to be spending time with her. Not long after that, she and a friend of hers tried to say that he tried to run over her. He had told me earlier that he was afraid that she was going to try to do something to frame him in some way, since she bragged to him that she would have him put in jail or in a mental institution. It is like she has some kind of hold on him. What can I do to help him?

Jennifer: It really is a difficult position to be in when you are trying to help another adult. Find out as much information as possible about the resources in your area regarding domestic violence and I would also ask about a good attorney so that your nephew can consult with him or her prior to any legal trouble his wife brings about (to head it off at the pass so to speak). It is difficult to see the trouble he is in without much ability to help him if he isn't yet ready to help himself. It is hard for men who are going through this because of the shame associated with her abusing him, but it does happen and as you can see it can be very detrimental emotionally (and physically if she indeed does assault him with her car).
