68. StorkNet Member: I am 60 years old and all my life I have lived in an abusive family. My parents were physically and emotionally abusive to each other. At 18 I married a man I deeply loved, but the day after the wedding, he became a stranger who was physically and verbally abusive. I was 45 before someone convinced me that this was not a normal family relationship. I understand the fear, the lost self-esteem, and all the reasons for staying, including not believing in divorce. We are still together, but I have changed and it has made the situation better for me. He has gentled with age but I have given up hope of a marriage relationship. I do not trust him, period. I have overcome regrets that made me mentally, emotionally and physically sick. After years of counseling I am regaining my self-esteem and believing in me again. My plea to others who are abused in any way is to get out, leave, and do not look back. There are people who will help you. There is a better life. Don't wait, don't trust, don't hope. Get out now!
