88. StorkNet Member: It's nice to hear about a wife with children who finally left, but tell us how you find your funds to live on and where to go? Where I live you must have been physically abused and filed a report before you can go to a shelter, and if you have a car or any cash on you, then homeless shelters reject you as well. That's the reason I stay. No money for I have a young child and no way to hire a sitter. Family is out of the question.

Jennifer: It sounds like your options look minimal for you at this point. In my area you can be in the homeless shelter with a car and it is mandatory that you get a job in a reasonable amount of time. They then help you save money toward getting into an apartment. I'm assuming you have checked with local professionals in your area to confirm the information you have, but if not please do so and ask too if they have any suggestions for you locally. What I would do immediately would be to start accumulating some cash in a safe place. If you have a friend you can trust ask her to keep it for you. I know that some spouses keep tight control on the finances, but every little bit helps for the escape. Other local agencies in my area assist as they are able with rent deposits (Catholic Charities is one). In California you can apply for CalWORKs (which is the new welfare program that helps assist women and men in getting jobs). With CalWORKs you can get some income for yourself and your child, along with "food stamps" (they are now on a debit type card in our county), and child care once you are job ready. Every county in our state does things on their own program so it is a good idea to talk with a worker or ask for information from the eligibility office in your area. They also can send you to school for training or a trade.

If you have a reason to make a police report, do so and then get into the shelter. They may also have access to transitional housing. A client of mine from Colorado informed me that that state is very progressive with their assistance for domestic violence families. In our county there is also a program through the District Attorney for victims of violent crime. There is financial assistance for a variety of needs and concerns that relate to the crime, but you would also need a crime report to access these funds.
