Gain Targets in Pounds

These guidelines for
weight gain are only for general information. It is very important that
you follow your physician's advise since teenage mothers have highly individual
needs. Always discuss weight gain goals and your concerns with your obstetrician.
Referral to a dietitian for nutritional assessment and guidance may be
recommended.
The general recommendation
for total pregnancy weight gain for teenagers who have a low weight for
their height at the time of conception is between 35 and 40 pounds. Weight
gain during the first trimester is usually modest but, beginning in the
second trimester, a steady gain of 1.2-to-1.3 pounds per week is encouraged.
Older teens who have reached full height and are less than 5'2" should
aim for the lower end of the weight gain range. Print out this page to
track your weight gain over the weeks of your pregnancy.
