~ Meet Brittany
Hey everybody, my name is Brittany, I am 22 and pregnant with my first child. Although unexpected, I am very happy and excited to be sharing this journey with you. My boyfriend, Ben (21), and I have only been together for a few months now. Although we have known each other for almost two years, and it took us awhile to finally express our feelings for one another, it didn't take us long to realize this was where we were meant to be.
Although we are young and our relationship is new, our parents are be very supportive. I was born with Spastic Dysplasia Cerebral Palsy. Which, while it mostly affects my lower extremities, has made our families very concerned for my health through this process. Cerebral Palsy affects everyone differently and while my case isn't the mildest I've seen, it certainly isn't the worst I've seen either. Basically when I was born (three month premature) I was underdeveloped and suffered from multiple brain bleeds. While this didn't leave any fine motor or speech difficulties, it left me with nerve damage and so the nerves that tell my muscles to relax and respond to certain things take a lot longer to get the message from my brain to the muscle. For example, going up steps, it's not as easy as just picking up my foot and placing it on the step; I have to think about every move I make and how and what my muscles have to do to make it. I walk with crutches and wear foot orthotics on both legs to keep my ankles from collapsing.
I know, enough about me, back to the reason you are reading this journal in the first place. Ben and I are very much looking forward to welcoming our little bump into the world around January 19th 2012, which is eleven days after I turn 23!
