Heather's Pregnancy Journal

Week 31 ~ June 19, 2002
~ Completely Normal

Our baby is totally normal! I keep waiting for something to go wrong, but the midwife reassured me that many women have totally normal pregnancies AND totally normal births. We had a checkup last week, and the midwife was able to determine that the baby is head down. And the "part" that I've been feeling in my upper right side is actually the baby's little butt. I have been feeling the "kicks" mostly on my left side, and that is where his/her arms and legs are located. The midwife invited Steve up to feel the baby from the outside and he thought it was pretty cool to feel the back and the butt. I am so happy that we decided to go to a midwifery practice - our average office visit lasts 30 minutes, and the whole time is with the midwife! She asked if I have had any contractions, and I said no, because I didn't think I had. However, when I laid down for her to measure my belly, she said that I was having one, because my belly was hard, and then got soft. Steve seems to think that since I don't feel these contractions, I won't feel the "real" ones - yeah, right!

My sister and brother-in-law came up Saturday night, and it was great to spend time with my new niece (and my adorable nephew). It was VERY strange holding my 3 week-old niece and thinking, "Wow, in just a few short weeks, we will have one of these!" I changed Maia into her pajamas Saturday night, and I had forgotten how floppy newborns are - I was so afraid I was going to "break" her! My sister reminded me that I dressed my nephew when he was a newborn, but I guess I have forgotten. Steve did such an awesome job holding Maia - he is a natural. Sunday morning he got her dressed (now remember, this was the very first time he has handled a newborn), and he did a much better job than me! He played with Levi outside, and I almost got teary-eyed, thinking about what a great dad he will be. I got Steve a watch for Father's Day (he hasn't had a watch since he was 14), since he will have to time the contractions.

My total weight gain is at 18 pounds - YAY! I keep attributing it to the fact that I have to eat small meals all day and "graze," but yesterday, I think I proved myself wrong. I have been so afraid to eat a big meal, because the last time I did, I thought I was going to puke (oh, sorry Mom - throw up - Mom hates the word "puke"). We had a barbecue/potluck at work yesterday, and I brought my veggie burger and baked beans. I ate that, but a lady had extra bratwurst, so I had a bratwurst. Then some deviled eggs (well, just the yolk - I HATE the white part). Then another bratwurst. Then some potato chips. Then some more deviled eggs. And a piece of pie. And no, I didn't throw up! That could be a bad sign . . . I don't want to gain a bunch of weight here in the third trimester!

Wish me healthy eating!
