First, I just wanted to say how sorry I am that it's been awhile since I submitted a journal entry. We had a couple of hiccups that seemed to come just right after another.
There was holiday travel for Thanksgiving, of course, and then some changes with my job that required my attention. Even though I am on maternity leave, I still had to help with some transitions that were taking place and that took away any "spare" time that I normally have when Will naps.
Also, I re-injured an old neck injury. When I was 16, my dad and I were involved in a car accident. We were rear-ended on an off-ramp. We were sitting still, waiting for the light, and the police estimated that we were hit at about fifty miles per hour. My neck was pretty banged up and I dealt with about a year of physical therapy. It's been over ten years now, and every once in awhile, my neck will still seize up. Usually, I am able to rest, take some muscle relaxants, apply heat and ice, and the pain goes away after a couple of days. However, this time, resting and muscle relaxants (while breastfeeding) were not an option. I was in pretty bad shape for a couple of weeks, until I was finally able to get into some physical therapy. Even after that, I had to stay off of the computer a little while longer, since that sometimes irritates my neck as well.
The other disruption is that poor Will had his first cold, with a stuffy nose, dry cough, and fever. He was miserable and fussy, giving me no sleep and only a few minutes to myself each day. I literally could not put him down for more than a minute or he would start crying. He is finally getting better and back to sleeping more at night, which makes for a better day.
As for the sleeping, prior to the cold, we were getting ten and eleven hour stretches at night. It was great, as it gave me some downtown in the evening before bed and a full night's sleep myself. Last night was the first good night of sleep we've had in almost a week, with a nice nine hour stretch. I woke up at 6 AM, feeling great after seven uninterrupted hours! It's amazing what a little sleep will do for both of us!
Will is still doing great with his morning nap, going down usually without a bit of fussiness and staying down for around an hour, although sometimes he sleeps a bit less or a bit more. The rest of the day is less predictable. I can usually get him down for a second nap, but if that one is too short, he usually needs a third nap or sometimes I have to take him to bed with me if he is so fussy that he can't put himself to sleep. It's a great excuse for me to lay down, since I probably wouldn't do that if it wasn't with him.
It's so hard for me to believe that Christmas is less than a week away! I am in no way ready as we have had some bad weather and I wasn't able to drive with my neck being so sore. We are planning on trying to do the majority of our shopping this weekend - along with everyone else in the world! I might have Mike stay with Will while I fight the crowds.
We will be spending the holiday with my in-laws and the weekend after with my family. It makes for a lot of driving, but everyone wants to see Will for the holidays. And who are we to deny them time with this cute little guy?!
I want to wish each one of you a happy holiday season!
