Katie's Pregnancy Journal

Week 36 ~ August 10, 2008
~ Almost Here?

My 36th week OB appointment was last Friday. Time for my first internal exam. I had heard that this wasn't fun, but I was a little surprised by how uncomfortable it was! Now I am a little more frightened for labor and delivery and definitely know that I will be needing that epidural!

The good news from the exam is that I am 2 cm dilated and 60% effaced. Like any first time mom, I have high hopes of not going past my due date and a couple of weeks early would suit me just fine! However, I also know the grim reality that many, many women walk around 2 cm dilated (and some even more) for weeks! So, I know not to get too excited - but my doctor didn't help with keeping my expectations realistic. He told us that he thought it was a good indicator that I wouldn't go past my due date and that first time pregnancies don't usually dilate this early unless something is going on. He declared it good progress and thinks that the baby could be here in a week or two!

I have been having some contractions, especially at night. They are different from the Braxton Hicks that I have gotten used to over the past few weeks. These are lower, feel more like menstrual cramps, and come with a bit of back pain. Well, pain might not be the right word. The contractions don't hurt at all, but they are noticeable. While they aren't strong enough to wake me up, if I happen to be awake already from one of my many trips to the bathroom, I sometimes have trouble falling back asleep. I guess my mind starts racing with all of the things that we still have to do and the reality that even if it's not in a week or two, he is still coming. Soon.

I am definitely in full-on nesting mode. I have a list a mile long of things that I would love to get accomplished before these contractions really mean business. Nothing helps spur a pregnant couple into action more than the OB saying it could be as soon as a week before their baby is born! My husband and I were on a run this whole weekend. We finally bought a freezer, which can now be filled with extra meals and supplies. We returned all of the duplicate shower gifts and things we just don't need. With that money, we got our stroller and baby monitor, the last two major purchases on our list. Now, it's just a matter of the little things, stuff we probably don't even really need. I have everything necessary and whatever we don't have, we have plenty of friends who have offered their services - and three very eager grandparents to help fill in the blanks!

I want to reorganize some closets and drawers, especially downstairs to make more room for baby things. I am calling today to get our carpets cleaned sometime this week. There are also little things here and there that I want to get accomplished, but the world would clearly keep turning if I didn't get them done.

At least I will have a little more time for all of this nesting. Starting today, I am on maternity leave. It feels kind of strange to be done with work, but I am grateful for the amazing benefits that I have to allow me to take this extra time off before Little Man gets here. I know most people don't have that luxury. I do plan on trying to get as much rest as possible, in between my nesting fits, and I do have another prenatal massage planned for Friday. I know, I know, I am really too spoiled!

I hope you are all doing well!
