If there is one thing I've learned so far it's patience! No matter how much researching, wishing, hoping and praying you do there is no way to control what will happen. I recently watched an episode of The Baby Lab on Discovery Health and was holding my breath as those women anxiously waited for the results of their IVF cycles. My eyes welled up with tears for those that got a negative result because I know exactly what they had just gone through and because I felt so relieved, even now, to have gotten pregnant on the first try. Now I'm at 20 weeks and halfway to meeting this very busy little person!
My growing tummy makes it all so much more real for both me and David. Sometimes when I come out of the bathroom after getting ready for bed he looks at me and laughs, "Whoa! That sure is a big belly!" He told me about a newborn they had in the emergency room who had been born in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He said it was covered in white stuff that was hard to get off and that he couldn't find warm water anywhere. I thought it was interesting that he took the time to clean the baby off since usually he'd let one of the nurses do it. He said he couldn't believe that soon we'll have one of our own.
The guest room closet has a pile of boxes with baby things in them since I got a crib bedding set that I ordered online in the mail this week. I chose lambs in creams, beiges and browns - safe for a boy or a girl. I can't wait until it's time to set it all up but that will have to wait another couple of months. My favorite thing to look at is a newborn baby diaper. I don't know why but one of those little diapers makes this baby seem more real than anything else. They're so tiny but I know that, at least for a little while, they look big on a newborn. I can't imagine that one day I'll be so tired of changing these little dirty diapers!
Now I've begun researching cribs, gliders, and bassinets. We are going to refinish the dresser and nightstand that are in the guest bedroom to match whichever crib we choose. At my next appointment I'll ask about the best time for childbirth classes and confirm the birthing plan I hope we can follow. So much to do, but I want to enjoy all of it!
