Nicole's Pregnancy Journal

Birth Story
~ November 12, 2002

Sorry for the delay in writing Abby's birth story, but I've had some health issues the past week and this is the first time I've gotten to a computer, but we'll talk about that later.

I reported for duty (ha ha) at 6:30 AM on the morning of November 12. Now believe me, I did not get any sleep the night before, I think I got up at 1:00 AM and did my dishes. I was so excited, yet apprehensive about being induced, since I was induced with Gabe and it was horrible.

Anyway, Edwin and I got to the hospital and they hooked me up to a monitor to check to see if I was contracting and lo and behold I was! They were pretty consistent too, only I couldn't feel them. After 30 minutes of monitoring, they hooked me up to the pitocin and we waited. It seemed to take forever for the contractions to get painful, however it really was a very short time that it took for me to go from 3 cms to 4.5 cms. I think it took about an hour for that. Once I got to 4.5 cms, the doctor came in and broke my water. I had to call my dear husband on his cell phone (I had sent him to Walmart) and tell him to get back to the hospital pronto, because breaking my water certainly got things going.

Once my waters were broken, the contractions started to get a little intense, but not bad enough yet for me to ask for any pain medication. I just kept thinking, "That wasn't too bad, I'll see how bad the next one is." However, at about 10:45, I finally broke down and asked for some demerol. Once they gave me the shot, I was sleeping between contractions and just waking up during them. That was really an interesting sensation.

At 11:15, I made Edwin go get the nurse to check me. She finally came in, and found that I was to a 6.5. I remember being so disappointed. However at 11:30, I made him go get her again and I was to an 8. Then again at 11:45, I was to a 10 and ready to go. My mom had gotten there by this point and I was so ready to get it over with.

The doctor told me that I could start pushing when I got ready to, and so when I felt the urge, I bore down with all my might. I pushed six times, through 3 contractions and Abigail Katherene McIntyre was born at 12:10 PM. She weighed 9 pounds!, and was 21 inches long. Talk about feeling the Ring of Fire! So much for not having a big baby! The doctor was way off on what he thought she weighed. He estimated that she was about 7.5 lbs. HA HA!

I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures for you, but I don't have access to a scanner right now. She is beautiful though, and her size was due to her having chubby cheeks! Not like Gabe, who was so big boned, she is really kind of petite, but in a chubby kind of way. She has really dark black hair right now, just like her brother did, so we are curious to see if it will all fall out. I hope not; she has the perfect coloring to be dark headed.

Thanks so much to everyone who prayed for us. The delivery went perfect, and although I had a lot of postpartum bleeding and am still dealing with that, I wouldn't have changed a thing. I was so happy to have her here and healthy. It has been quite a journey, this pregnancy, and keeping this journal has kind of put everything into perspective for me. I'm really thankful for the opportunity to have done this and recommend journaling to everyone.

So thanks again to all of you who emailed me and please keep us in your prayers!
