~ The Waiting Game
Yup, I'm definitely pregnant. Last week I was complaining that I was always too hot. This week I have constantly been cold. Other signs of pregnancy, besides the HUGE belly I carry out front, include heartburn (thank you for some relief Prilosec OTC), exhaustion, grunting and groaning when I try to stand and Braxton Hicks contractions. Okay, so not all of those are exclusive to pregnancy but they are the things that I am noticing most right now, especially the Braxton Hicks.
I have been having Braxton Hicks for about three weeks now. At first they were very sporadic and not very noticeable, more like uncomfortable cramps that would come and go, lasting only a short time. They would also occur around the same time every day (at night when I was trying to sleep) or when I was doing a lot of walking. Now they've picked up and are more frequent and more painful. Sometimes I have to stop for a bit and rest when I have them because they are more than just uncomfortable... they HURT. There was even a time this week that I wondered if it was labor and not just Braxton Hicks.
I'm still here and still pregnant so obviously it wasn't labor but it makes me wonder if I will actually know when real labor begins. I know I had the same concerns when I was pregnant with Hannah and I weathered it just fine. My doctor keeps reminding me that all labors and deliveries are different and I might not have the same feelings and experiences I had with Hannah. I guess all I can do is be as prepared as possible and trust my body and instincts.
Speaking of prepared... we still are not. I don't know what is wrong with me. I have all these grandiose ideas and plans but I never seem to be able to put them into action. Our hospital bag is still not packed, we still don't have a name for the baby and we haven't pulled out any of the baby gear we need to bring our new guy home. After I finish this journal entry I am going to make a list of what absolutely needs to be done and I will assign a chore or two to each day of the week. Based on past experience, if I choose a specific day of the week to get something accomplished I am more likely to actually do it than not.
My OB appointment went well, I guess. It was very uneventful. The baby is doing well. He's head down and was measuring about 7.5 lbs at the ultrasound. He's still expected to be a big boy but the doctor isn't planning on intervening any time soon. My doctors do not like to induce unless there is a medical reason for it and a big baby is not considered a medical reason. The only option they would offer is a scheduled c-section if the baby continues to measure big and I get close to or go past my due date. I don't know what the difference would be in taking the baby out via c-section before labor or inducing labor early . . . either way he'd come before he chose to but the doctors think there is an important difference.
I had the Group B Strep swab and I will get the results at my next appointment. From here on out I will be going in weekly for my appointments. I'm hoping that I will be checked at my next appointment and there will have been some progress made. I'm not expecting much but these Braxton Hicks have to have been doing something. Even my doctor said that he expects me to go into labor before my due date. His expectation was that I would go into labor in the next "2 to 3 weeks". That would make it the 23rd through the 30th of this month. All I can do is get as prepared as possible, cross my fingers and continue playing the waiting game.
