MRI Better for Details than Fetal Ultrasound
SAN FRANCISCO, CA--Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now being used as a follow-up to provide more information about fetal abnormalities suspected in ultrasound exams, according to studies at the University of California San Francisco and Harvard Medical School. The study was presented at the Radiological Society of North America annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois. Researchers say the MRI can sometimes rule out abnormalities or help determine whether intrauterine surgery can be performed. Before MRI, parents who were given questionable or bad news after fetal ultrasound had no options for further investigating the situation.
