Caffeine Ok During Pregnancy
WASHINGTON, DC--Questions about the safety of caffeine consumption for pregnant women occur from time-to-time. To address this issue, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that caffeine does not adversely affect reproduction in humans. The agency currently advises pregnant women who consume caffeine to do so in moderation. Numerous studies support the conclusion that moderate consumption of caffeine does not predispose expectant mothers to spontaneous abortion or pre-term delivery, nor the fetus to low birth weight. Laurie R. Green, M.D., a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology in San Francisco, California, said, "I advise pregnant women to moderate what they do in all areas. I feel completely comfortable with my patients drinking coffee and sodas and eating foods containing caffeine. Pregnant women have enough to worry about without being concerned about a perfectly safe ingredient such as caffeine."
